Scottish TV to make archive available online

Scottish Television is planning to launch a broadband TV service this autumn, putting thousands of hours of its programmes online including a 50-year archive. Some of STV’s titles include Taggart, Rebus, and High Road.

Apparently it will be launched Scotland-wide – whether it will use some kind of IP Geo-targetting to restrict this or if the whole of the UK and beyond can view it, at a price, remains to be seen. As it’s a commercial operator rather than the BBC, who I believe is obliged to make online content available only to a UK audience because of the TV Licence issue, then it could generate more revenue for itself by going international.

Another TV company looking at the benefits of the web for content distribution and monetisation.
