Samsung has launched the YP-U2, a fairly budget addition to its MP3 player range with direct USB connectivity, not unlike Apple’s shuffle.

Samsung quite rightly point out that the direct USB plug eliminates the need for cables, with the transfer of tunes a simple drag and drop. The player is compatible with "all the major operating systems", but you can’t play AAC files – it’s for use with MP3, WMA, OGG, ASF and WAV formats.

It’s main selling point is definitely size – weighing only 29g and measuring 87.6 mm by 24.4 mm, the 2GB YP-U2 can still hold up to 1000 WMA tracks and has enough battery power to last 13 hours. The YP-U2 also features a 4 line white on black LCD display, which shows track information and navigation through the menus and a voice reocrder function. Sound performance is boosted by DNSe 3D sound, which creates a rich sound using Digital Natural Sound engine technology.

The YP-U2 is available now from around £49 for the 512MB model, £69 for the 1GB model, and £99 for the 2GB model.
