If the thought of choosing between Blu-ray and HD DVD is already giving you a headache, hope may be at hand with the news that Samsung is considering producing a twin-format machine for release later this year.

A spokesman for the company is quoted on DigitalWorld Tokyo as saying:  "We don’t have a plan to make an HD DVD-only player but are considering a universal player. We are preparing HD DVD now and if we launch a universal player it will be the end of this year or early next year."

Samsung previously mentioned a universal player towards the end of last year, but played it down when it announced its first Blu-ray machine, the BD-P1000, in January. Samsung has always maintained its preference for Blu-ray over HD DVD.
