Google has made anothwer tentative step into Microsoft territory by introducing a beta version of an online spreadsheet program.

This initial program can organise, store, and share information over the web. Users can save the documents to their Google account or export them as .csv, .xls or html files. Data is stored on Google’s servers – which you can view as a good or bad thing in view of information from Gmail previously going missing.

geThe benefits of the tool, which has over 200 functions and formulas, are obvious – it’s free, it’s available whenever you’re online and it offers the opportunity to share spreadsheets easily online. Multiple users can also edit spreadsheets simultaneously, whilst keeping track of each other’s movements via the on-screen chat window.

Like the initial rollout of Gmail, Google is limiting the number of new users for software to avoid overloading its systems.
