Tissot limited edition Michael Owen PRC200 watch

It’s easy to forget that the World Cup is actually about football when you’re drowning in World Cup merchandise, much of it your everyday gadgets and consumer goods with a St George’s flag slapped on the top. So it’s refreshing to see something a little classier, albeit with only a tenuous link to the football.

Yet there’s something slightly disappointing about the Michael Owen PRC200 watch from Tissot. I expected it to be the football equivalent of a Mickey Mouse watch – young Michael, arms outstretched with cheeky grin, pointing to the hours and minutes. Oh no, it’s much more upmarket than that. Apparently worn by England’s half-fit striker, the defining feature is a chronograph dial designed as a number 10 (the number on Owen’s shirt), with a striking red second counter which contrasts with the white face, plus a smart stainless steel bracelet strap.

It’s certainly an attractive watch and in a different league to most World Cup merchandise, which is reflected in the price – £265.
