Skype launches licensed music ringtones

Got yourself a Skype phone? You’ll soon be able to change your incoming ring to the tune of your choice, after the net communications company announced a deal with some of the major publishing companies to distribute music as Skype ringtones.

The agreements are with three major companies – EMI Music Publishing, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and Warner/Chappell Music, along with the UK’s collecting society for author/publisher rights, the MCPS-PRS Alliance. Skype’s licenses will initially allow it to lawfully distribute master tones from artists who are part of the Warner Music Group, which includes the likes of Madonna, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Green Day.

Ringtones will be available from a revamped Personalise Skype store, with the first featured ringtone artist being Madonna.
