Western Digital's drives for bookworms

Remember those video cases that looked like books, designed to make you look well-read instead of someone who spends half their life taping sitcoms off the telly? Well, it seems Western Digital are now employing similar logic with their latest external hard drive – the My Book.

Therre are two versions of My Book – a Premium Edition that incorporates a USB 2.0 port and a pair of Firewire 400 connectors or a USB-onlt Essential Edition. Both units come with WD’s own back-up software and incorporate 7,200rpm drives with 16MB of cache memory. They’re not bus-powered, so require an AC adaptor, which could be a giveaway when it’s on the bookshelf.

Capacities range from 160GB to 500GB, with prices for the Essential Edition from $150 to $330 and the Premium Edition drives ranging from $180 to $350, with the drives ready to ship at the end of this month.
