Microsoft delays Vista

The launch date of Microsoft’s Vista operating system has slipped from the second half of this year back to January 2007 – though a version for corporate customers will ship in November 2006.

Vista, which was known as Longhorn during its long development, is a major re-working of Windows that makes changes, among other things, to the way the operating system looks and how it handles networking and sound. According to Microsoft, efforts to improve security are largely behind the delayed release.

When it does arrive, there should be six versions of the operating system – three for home users, two for businesses and one for emerging markets.

No details have been given about the pricing of the separate versions.
