Freeview hits 10 million mark

Freeview has announced that over 10 million Freeview-enabled digital boxes and digital televisions have been sold since the service launched in October 2002. The free-to-air digital terrestrial TV service is now in 6.4 million homes, with boxes in additional rooms boosting the total number to 10 million. This puts Freeview into direct competition with the pay TV companies – Sky is in 8m homes and cable is in more than 3m households.

Along with the falling price of set top boxes, now down to as low as £30, a rapid increase in sales of personal video recorders (PVRs) and digital TVs have further boosted Freeview’s sales at the other end of the technical spectrum.

Freeview is backed by the BBC, National Grid Wireless, BSkyB, ITV and Channel 4. It currently offers over 30 free digital television channels as well as over 20 free digital radio stations. This will be further boosted by new channels this year, including ITV’s new children’s service from March 11th and FilmFour becoming a free service in July.
