Apple unveils the iPod Hi-fi

Well, we did tip you off about this some time ago, so it’s really no big surprise to see Apple’s boombox – sorry, iPod Hi-fi – become reality.

The iPod Hi-fi has one of those love/hate designs – understated chic or a big speaker, take your pick. It features handles for easy movement, a removable front grille with precision-mounting clips, touch-sensitive volume control buttons, an Apple Remote for song and volume control from anywhere in the room and it runs from mains and batteries.

In terms of the sound produced, Apple claims their iPod Hi-Fi delivers breathtaking acoustic performance and room-filling sound unlike any other speaker system designed for the iPod, derived from two custom designed wide-range speakers and a tuned, ported bass system, which gives you a big sound without any vibration.

The iPod Hi-fi obviously integrates with your iPod via the dock connector and acts as a charger. And just because it’s from Apple doesn’t mean they haven’t thought of others – it includes a dual-purpose 3.5-mm auxiliary input that accepts either analogue or digital signals for easy connection to a wide range of audio sources.

You should be able to order one now from the Apple site. They’re priced at £249.
