Technology to kill off record labels?

Not long off the Brits now, lots of back slapping for the great and the good of the record industry. But will the golden years last much longer? Not if a new online service called Tunecore takes off.

Tunecore allows unsigned artists to directly upload their songs and artwork onto the iTunes music store for a small fee, cutting out the record label and keeping the profit and ownership of music with the bands. The service costs around £10 per album, with an annual maintenance fee of £5 to stay on the iTunes store thereafter.

While that may sound like doom and gloom for labels, some are not so sure. With music about the hype as much as the songs, the marketing muscle of the big record labels should keep them as key players for some time to come.
