AOL and Yahoo to introduce email charging?

According to a report in the International Herald Tribune, AOL and Yahoo may soon charge for sending emails.

According to the article, the two companies are looking at a system that gives preferential treatment to messages from companies that pay a levy between a quarter of a cent to 1 cent each to have messages delivered. The companies will still accept email from those who have not paid, but the paid messages will be given special treatment similar to the Royal Mail’s ‘special delivery’ in the UK.

The internet giants say this will help them identify legitimate mail and cut down on junk email, improving the overall quality of their service. It will also be a huge revenue generator if there is high take-up of the system.
