If you have at least a passing acquaintance with the world of Internet video, then you’ve probably encountered DivX, the compression technology used in a large number of videos. Well, DivX is getting an upgrade from version 5 to version 6, and it looks like a whole bunch of new features are going in. As far as I can tell, the upgrades adding subtitles, menus and different audio tracks make using DivX more like watching a DVD then downloaded video.

Firstly, XSUB™ subtitles are being put in, which lets you create video
files with multiple language subtitle sets. Interactive menus are being
put in, allowing you DVD style access to scenes, bonus features and
audio track and subtitle options. Chapter points are also going in, as
well as alternate audio tracks for different languages or speaker
configurations. XTAG™ video tags are being added that contain
information such as title, author and video specifications. And to top
it all off, DivX is getting its own shiny new file extension. (.divx,
in case you hadn’t guessed).
