Freeview in 3 million homes

Some good news for Digital Terrestrial TV at last. Figures from Ofcom – the new catch-all communications watchdog – show that the number of Freeview customers rose by over 40 per cent in the last quarter of 2003.

According to its statistics, the number of digital terrestrial boxes rose from 2,360,200 to 3,386,700 between Q3 and Q4 of last year – a whopping rise of 43.5 per cent. The number of Freeview households is now estimated to be 3,207,700 representing around 8.4 per cent of the total number of households.

In the same period the number of digital satellite subscribers increased by 2.6 per cent from 6,718,000 to 6,893,000. Digital cable didn’t show any growth during the period – in fact figures fell slightly from 2,248,190 subscribers to 2,248,166.
