JVC has entered the DVD recorder market in the UK with a £400 unit that is compatible with both DVD-RAM and DVD-RW rewritable formats.

The DR-M1 is also one of the first models on the market compatible with the PAL
Progressive format. PAL Progressive technology enhances picture definition, but only if you use a component input of the type found on most Plasma and LCD and some CRT TVs.

Its list of discs that it is compatible with includes DVD-Video discs, CD, CD-R/RW and Video CDs. It can also play back WMA and MP3 audio files, or JPEG digital still photos, stored on a CD-R or CD-RW disc.

Other features include iLink (for connecting a camcorder), DVD Navigation (to help consumers find their way round a disc) plus all the usual DVD-RAM tricks (pausing live TV/watching a programme that you are recording etc).

One neat innovation is On-Disc Timer Programming which writes the
data for timer recording to discs as well. It means that you can set the
timer just by loading a programmed disc into the DR-M1. This also ensures
that a particular programme is always recorded on the same disc.
