Motley_Crue-rock-band-single-sales.jpgIf you pay attention, read regularly and maybe even take down some notes every once in a while, you may recall an update we did based around reformed dad-rockers Motley Crue releasing a single in the game Rock Band.

This was clearly a clever marketing ploy designed to help the ageing band reach “the youth” – and boy, did it ever work. The play-along Rock Band version of Motley Crue’s single sold FIVE TIMES as many copies as the regular old-media, non-interactive iTunes single release, making it a storming success on the Rock Band scene.

The simultaneous release of “Saints of Los Angeles” on iTunes, Amazon and the rest of the music-shopping sites on April 15 managed to sell 10,000 copies in total – while a staggering 47,000 Rock Band players downloaded it through the Xbox 360’s Rock Band music store.

So there you go. The future of music is buying it in games. iTunes is doomed. And Motley Crue are going to be a last-minute high-profile booking at this year’s Glastonbury now the kids know who they are and can sing along with at least on of their songs.
