Opinion: Do you still care about the Nintendo Wii?

It was once the king of the gaming pile, so sought after that you'd have to give a kidney on the black market to get one in your home. But recent months have seen the Wii fall from grace, with profits down as much as half over the same period a year earlier. Has the bubble burst for the Nintendo Wii? If so, what has caused it? Here's Tech Digest's five reasons why the Wii's star is falling.

Which games console should you buy this Christmas? Xbox, Wii or even a PS3?

To decide which console is worthy of your cash, we'll be looking at seven key areas that need to be of the highest quality in order to warrant your attention: Games, Exclusive Titles, Media Options, Online Gaming, Extras, Future Features and of course Value For Money. We'll then tot up the results to see who comes out on top.

Nintendo: Wii Fit Plus, Vitality Sensor, Super Mario and all they announced at E3

Shipping over 15 million copies of Wii Fit obviously isn’t enough these days, especially with Microsoft and Sony both hot on your motion sensing heals. Sadly, all Nintendo could come up with in the new controller department is a fairly gimmicky sounding pulse monitor called the Wii Vitality sensor but then, that’s probably how people described the Balance Board when it first arrived.

The sensor works by wrapping around your little finger and working out just how your heart’s doing, presumably on a scale somewhere between total hysteria and death. Can’t see it really adding much to the gaming experience but I’m quite happy to be well and truly corrected.

Otherwise, it was a world of next generation favourites from the Japanese gaming giant with the most interesting being the Wii Fit Plus and the most nostalgic the upcoming Super Mario title for the Wii.

Wii Fit Plus is similar to the original but with the addition of customisable routines, the ability to choose programs targeted for specific parts of the body and 15 new games including juggling and skateboarding.

New Super Mario Bros is the faithfully, if unimaginatively, named title of the exploits of the world’s favourite Italian plumber. It’s a 2D screen scroller with automatic panning and zooming complete with the refreshing touch of a four-player cooperative mode, so you’ll no longer get stuck on level 6.3 on your own. It’ll be out in time for the “holiday season” which probably refers to Thanksgiving.

The last little treat was a the briefest of glimpses at the next Zelda game; so brief in that the only news was a slide and the fact that it’ll involve the Wii MotionPlus.

New Mario and Zelda games to be unveiled at E3?

Mario-and-Zelda-release copy.jpg

Are Nintendo going to announce new Mario and Zelda games at E3 next Tuesday? Well that certainly is the rumour.

It all seems to have started after Macquarie Research said: “We expect Nintendo to learn its lessons from last year and provide more gamer-centric announcements at E3 such as a new Zelda or Mario title for the Wii.”

Which certainly doesn’t sound to us like good solid fact-based information – it sound suspiciously like speculation. But well founded and oddly business-like speculation. But that’s the thing about speculation, it’s awfully exciting, sometimes more exciting than when the product actually arrives.

And you can’t deny, it would make sence to release a new Mario and/or Zelda game. It’s been two years since Mario Galaxy made its welcome appearance. Nintendo need to understand – people need more Mario. I need more Mario. We all, need, more, Mario. Come on guys – let’s have a Mario Party! No? Just me? And Mario…Not you Luigi. Nobody needs more Luigi.

TD Tips: the best video games characters of all time

Sonic the Hedgehog was voted the UK’s favourite games character in a survey of 500 people as announced yesterday in a part of a promotion for the upcoming London Games Festival.

We were not particularly happy with this at Tech Digest. I was quite amused to see Blanka from Street Fighter make it to number 10 but, on the whole, the list was a rather bland collection of the Marios, Donkey Kongs and Lara Crofts of this world.

These are all very worthy characters but where’s the imagination? Where are those precious gaming memories? So, TD Tips today takes a slightly different turn in bringing you our favourite game characters of all time…
