iPhone 3G S secret specs leaked by T-Mobile

iphone spec.jpg

The secret behind what makes the iPhone 3G S tick is out the bag this morning after the Dutch carrier of the latest Apple phone spilled the beans on their website. The three phrases that come into my head are “whoops”, “ha ha ha” and “nice”.

As it goes, they’re pretty much what we expected from the rumours all those weeks ago and I’m rather chuffed on my guesswork in the super smartphone comparison feature I put together yesterday.

All the same, I’m sure Apple is none to pleased that T-Mobile wasn’t quite with the program. Personally, I don’t see what there was to hide. A 600MHz processor and 256MB RAM is a perfectly respectable chipset. It could be something to do with all the iPhone 3G handsets that are about to be pelted at O2 execustives.

Apple update: Jobs to return and iPhones to launch?

comedy-jobs.jpg

Steve Jobs is set to return from his sick leave on schedule at the end of June – or is he….?

According to the WSJ, senior Apples are trying to coordinate El Jefe’s return with one product launch or another and they’ve not even ruled out a surprise appearance at WWDC on Monday. I feel like I could be adding a world of conspiracy theories here about cloning him over the last six months or bolstering Jobs’s body with Nvidia chips and combo drives, but actually I’m just pleased the chap is well again.

It can’t be easy having the state of your health made so public especially when half the tech world has the knives out for you anyway. The dude deserves a break. Maybe I’ll send him some flowers. Anyway.

In product news/rumour, even the FT is reporting that we’ll be looking at low cost iPhones as early as Monday with anything as low as $99 expected for the bottom end handset. The Carphone Warehouse has apparently got four placeholders on their websites for iPhones and one of them is named “iPhone Video”target=”_blank”. Whether that’s a working title or not is another thing, and there’s still a chance that these placeholders represent colours rather than models.

The one thing I can tell you for sure is that the action is hotting up. I’d stay glued to your screens on Monday afternoon if I were you.

RUMOUR: iPhones to come in 4GB, 8GB, 16GB & 32GB

iphone3G.jpg

Trickle by tricle we’re working out what Apple plans to release come WWDC this year and today is further evidence that they’ve got a few differnet options for us.

A source at a mobile phone certificating body in the US has seen papers approving 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB sized iPhones which would suggest that Apple is moving away from a one handset strategy.

There’s already been word of a larger media tablet and we’ve seen mooted spec sheets for the current model’s improvement but the introduction of smaller memory units points towards early talk of more basic iPhones, perhaps even available for less than £100.

Doubtless we’ll have more and more as the WWDC gets closer and I’ll keep you posted as soon as I hear.

RUMOUR: New iPhone specs and release date

iphone3.jpg

Word has broken webside of the dates and specs on the next generation iPhone. This time it’s from a friend of a friend of friend of one of the Apple hardware team and the specs are certainly consistent with the murmurings so far.

  • 32GB and 16GB to replace current capacities
  • $199 and $299 price-points to be maintained
  • 3.2 Megapixel camera
  • Video recording & editing capabilities
  • Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
  • Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
  • OLED screen
  • 1.5X The battery life
  • Double the RAM and processing power
  • Built-in FM transmitter
  • Apple logo on the back to light up
  • Rubber-tread backing
  • Sleeker design
  • Built-in compass
  • Revolutionary combination of the camera, GPS, compass, and Google maps to identify photo and inform about photo locations.
  • Turn by turn directions
  • July 17th, 2009 release date

As to whether it’s true, we’ll have to wait and see, but I like the sound of that OLED screen and subsequent battery life. The only question left is: To Jailbreak or not to Jailbreak?

RUMOUR: iPhone 3G to get only minor update in 2009

chinese-iphone.jpg

Word on a Chinese forum that the iPhone 3G will only be getting a few subtle tweeks this year will come as a sigh of relief to those who signed up to the Jesus Phone in the last few months.

According to one poster, who claims to have had his hands on the new prototype, we’ll getting ostensibly the same handset in looks and design with the identical 3.5″ 480 x 320 touchscreen, but it will be running faster and stronger than ever thanks to the change from a 400MHz Samsung ARM processor to a 600MHz model. There’s also a doubling of the RAM to an old laptop threatening 256MB.

The claims echo older stories of a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus, a magnetometer compass and the two model memory choices of 16GB and 32GB.

Always hard to tell if there’s much truth in these things particularly as there’s been some Chinese whispers involved – pun semi-intended – but there’s a lot that feels right about the features even down to the model numbers quoted in the post.

Apple Insider is treating the story with a degree of caution but then they’ve a greater Mac reputation at stake.

RUMOUR: iPhone 3.0 to launch with 3.0 OS on 12/6/09

iphone-3.0.jpg

Word round the infoblob has it that the iPhone 3.0 OS will be out on the 12th June after an employee at AT&T leaked the information. Now, it doesn’t take putting a lot of 2s together to work out that there’s a very good chance that a third generation of the iPhone itself will come out with it.

Reasons why:

1) The last two years have seen iPhone’s launched in June/July
2) Everyone has depleted their stocks of iPhone 3Gs without replacing them
3) If you’re launching a new OS, you might as well launch a new handset to show it off.

Reasons why not:

1) It’s all a bit obvious

My money’s on the new handset too. How about yours? Send me an e-mail or DM us on Techdigest and techdigestnews.
