ZuneFest: Zune 2 press release leaks online, get set for Zune Social community

Those pesky internet users, you can’t trust them to respect an embargo meant for journalists. Someone on the Zunerama forums has posted details from Microsoft’s Zune announcement, which goes out officially later tonight.

To be honest though, it doesn’t give anything away that hasn’t been strongly rumoured in recent days: a new 80GB hard drive Zune, two Flash-based models at 4GB and 8GB, and wireless sharing in all of ’em, as well as the ability to play TV shows recorded using Microsoft’s Vista Media Center.

ZuneFest rumour: Zune 2 to get DRM-free music?

zune2.jpgSo, there are deafening rumours that Microsoft will hold some kind of event today to announce its second-generation Zune (despite the fact that us Europeans haven’t even got the first one yet). Silicon Valley Insider has some new details.

Apparently Microsoft plans to use DRM-free music as a big selling point for the new Zunes. As the blog points out, this doesn’t exactly fit well with the existing Zune sharing system, which by definition requires DRM to ensure people pay for the tunes they’ve shared.

PS3 and Xbox 360 have "near identical" UK sales figures for 2007

ps3-xbox-360-uk-sales.jpgSorry fanboys, here’s one statistic that can be trumpeted both ways. According to games trade mag MCV, sales of PS3 and Xbox 360 are neck-and-neck for 2007, contrary to many people’s expectations.

Sony fanboy perspective: this is despite PS3 only going on sale towards the end of March, so Xbox 360 has had 12 more weeks on sale and STILL hasn’t ground Sony’s console into retail dust.

Video Review: Halo 3 on Xbox 360

Yeah, so there's a new game out called Halo 3. It's a bit obscure, and it's not being promoted very heavily, so you might not have heard of it. The hero's called Master Chef apparently, and these TV-themed games are rarely popular, so..

Thankfully, the chaps on Xboxer have managed to track down a copy, and posted a video review of it to enlighten you. There's more shooting and less cheese sauces than I expected, but there you go.

Halo 3 Xbox 360 Swag Bag is Incredible (Unbagging Shots and Video)

halo-3-unboxing-1.jpg
Yes, usually, I hate the unnecessary swag. But this Xbox 360, Halo 3 Edition passed envelope, is pretty much the best set of press junk I have ever seen. The padded envelope is printed with my name, and work address. There are two limited…err…um….errr…Here comes the unboxing…er unbagging.*
halo-3-unboxing-2.jpg
So this is me sliding the game out of the padded envelope, with bated breath. Could it be…is it…my god! It is! It’s the Saviour! The Game Of The Year! The game which will secure Microsoft’s crown as Console King! My god! Look at the shiny, clear plastic, stretched over the most handsome lime-green case you’ll ever own. I can hardly believe it…it…it…it’s beautiful….

Only for the obsessed: round-up of the worldwide Halo 3 on Xbox 360 video game launches

Curse living in the UK! As if not having peanut butter M&Ms, GAP Sweatshirts and more TV channels than you can poke a stick at isn’t enough, the US also got their hands on Halo 3 a full day ahead of us. And it’s not just the Yanks we’re sending virtual envious glares at, it’s also the suntanned Kiwis and Aussies who are crossed off our Christmas card lists too. Bah humbug.

Not that us folk living in the UK and Europe have that much longer to wait, as the hugely-anticipated Game Of The Year is dropping into town tonight, with 1,000 stores across the UK extending their opening hours for the hordes of sweaty gamers expected. Of course, some of you may already have finished the last chapter in the trilogy by Bungie, as both Tesco and Argos somehow ‘accidentally’ managed to sell copies before the launch date. “Oh, sorry, mister, a unicorn ran into the store, grabbed several copies from the box, and placed them on the shelf, I didn’t know what to do!”

Let’s take a look at some of the carnage Halo 3 fanboys have wreaked across stores in the US, Australia and New Zealand in the last 12 hours or so…
