World's smallest PC unveiled – the teeny, tiny, Compulab fit-PC Slim

fit-pc-slim.jpg

“Honey, have you seen my PC?” “Did you check down the back of the sofa?”

That’s the refrain that’ll echo through the home offices of suburban Britain in the near future if this tiny, tiny PC takes off. This PC, no bigger than the palm of your hand, actually has surprisingly reasonable specs behind it. A 500MHz AMD Geode processor, upto 512MB of RAM, ethernet, Three USB ports, Wifi and a 60GB hard drive are available at maximum spec. Oh, and it runs Linux, obviously, though Windows XP is an option…

Dell & Tesco bringing Linux to the masses – launching £299 Inspiron Z530 "Web Browser" in October

dell-inspiron-z530-linux-laptop-tesco.jpg

Tesco selling Dell laptops – a match made in retailer heaven. Only, the thing is, and we’d hate to be the ones breaking this to the poor, confused buyer, the Z530 will be running Linux.

The Z530 is described by Tesco as a “Web Browser” rather than a Laptop, PC, portable computer or any of the more usual terms, so presumably Dell and Tesco are aiming…

Something to do with a PlayStation3 – spend 25 minutes waiting for Windows Vista to load

You have to love hackers. OK, so they occasionally hack into your email account and upload your cybersex email history to the internet for everyone to laugh at, print out and stick on the office noticeboard, but, once in a while, they pull off something truly magnificent.

Like this – getting Windows Vista running on a PlayStation3. It’s actually running under emulation, with Qemu 0.9.1 doing most of the work. Which is why it takes 25 minutes to boot up.

There’s quite a bit more to it than that, but it’s frankly way above my head and if I tried to explain how it’s been done I’d only get something wrong…

Acer officially announces the Aspire One sub-notebook, the Eee 900 turns green with envy

acer-aspire-one-blue.jpg

Acer officially announced what we all suspected, that they had been readying a sub-notebook to compete with the Eee PC. The Aspire One, pictured, is an Intel Atom-based lappy with an 8.9-inch CrystalBrite LED backlit screen.

It’s not just a choice of 512MB or 1GB of RAM you have either, as Acer is kindly offering models with either Linpus Linux Lite or Windows XP, with the first OS packing 8GB of SSD and Windows giving the user 80GB of HDD space. Some things are best left to Acer to decide on however, so each model has a 0.3-megapixel CrystalEye webcam, 5-in1 card reader, Wi-Fi plus the option of integrated WiMAX or HSDPA connectivity.

Out on the 10th of July, the Linux…

OPINION: Forget Vista, XP and Linux – Firefox is now my #1 operating system

gary%20and%20sonic%20200.JPGI had some sort of religious dawn last week. Some kind of personal discovery, a moment of clarity, if you will. I used a Mac – and it was fine!

Now, I pretty much hate Macs. I’ve only ever used old Macs, rubbish ones from the distant past that are unable to cope with newer operating systems. So I associate Macs with PAIN.

But I just used one and it was fine. Because the only thing I use is Firefox…
