Samsung Planet app.JPGThey say there's an App for everything, but there is always room for one more right? Especially if that app is one that you yourself have designed.

To mark the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Portal, Samsung are launching the Planet App competition, where your crazy ideas become a reality on the Android Marketplace.

No technical app designing skills are necessary to enter, just a strong idea. The five best applications will then be short-listed for a public vote to see which app will be developed and distributed for free on the Android Marketplace, and who will bag the £2,000 grand prize.

Suzi Perry of Channel Five's Gadget Show will be judging the applications."I'm looking for ideas that are fun and inventive or would be useful to my everyday life. It's so exciting to be able to make someone's idea become a reality as most people would be put off even thinking about developing an app because it's too technical. We're urging people not to worry about that....we don't want to constrain creativity."

To enter the competition, visit www.galaxyportal.co.uk.

n97-mini.jpgFeeling lucky? Vodafone are running a weekly prize draw called Pick-A-Pixel, with entrants having the chance to win a Nokia N-97 Mini. In the lottery, each entrant is given five "pixels" which are entered into the draw, with a winner randomly picked each week. Players can earn more pixels by introducing friends to the game.

To take part, register for the game at http://apps.vodafone.co.uk/n97-mini-pickapixel/ .

If that isn't enough, Vodafone are running a daily competition with a £100 prize called the N97 Mini Mystery. Players must guess what lies behind an obscured picture, with each progressive entry revealing a little more of the hidden image. To enter, simply tweet your answer along with the hash-tag #n97mini.

Win £5,000 with new Vodafone online game

Comments (6)

vodafone.jpgHave you got way too much time on your hands and could do with a wallet full of spending money? Why not try Vodafone's new online Touch The Phone game, where some genuinely cool prizes can be won.

Touch The Phone is a multi-player game where you compete against other players to keep your mouse on a spinning 3D mobile phone. The player who stays in the game the longest will win £5,000.

There are two game modes - skill and endurance. The skill game, featuring a Nokia N97 Mini, could just take a few minutes to win but players will need quick reactions to stay in the game. The endurance game, featuring the Sony Ericsson Satio could take hours or maybe even days to win and requires maximum concentration.

Be warned: you could lose hours of your life to this game.

Try the game for yourself at http://www.vodafonetouchthephone.com/

Bill Nighy.jpgCelebrity photographer Jillian Edelstein has snapped the best of them including Kate Moss, Simon Pegg and Bill Nighy (pictured). Now she's working with Sony Ericsson on a new project called Eyes Wide Open to promote the launch of its latest Satio handset on Vodfaone.

The idea is simple: to capture images of 121 eyeballs in only 12.1 hours. Sony Ericsson is searching for people from all over the country and all walks of life to take part in the project.

To be in with a chance of winning go to Eyes Wide Open and upload your details, an image of your eyes and tell them why you'd like to be involved. Jillian will be personally selecting the 61 participants from all applicants and inviting them to a photoshoot, taking place during the first week of December at the flagship central London Vodafone store.

Amplichoir.jpg Here's an interesting and simple idea - a bit like a Karaoke version of the Million Dollar home page guy meets those naff T-Mobile ads in Trafalgar Square.

Dell and MTV have joined together to produce Amplichoir. The idea is simple. You record yourself singing Lollipop (the music used in the Dell adverts of course) using a webcam and microphone and you can see and hear yourself by clicking on a thumbnail on the home screen.

Billed as the world's biggest karaoke, it's so far attracted around 500 people to participate. The incentive for people to take part - apart from the chance of singing a rubbishy, but very catchy, song out of tune? The chance to win VIP tickets to the European MTV Music Awards and afterparty in Berlin on November 5th.

The prize includes flights and accommodation for you and a friend, stretch limousine transfers to and from the airport and awards, champagne and flowers in your room when you arrive, dinner for two at Fischers Fritz (the only 2 Michelin Star restaurant in Berlin), a relaxing massage in the Regent Spa, make-up/hairdresser to get you looking good for the awards and after-party, and an EMA Award presented to you on the red carpet. So what are you waiting for? Time to dust off that miicrophone and croon with the best of them.

Win a LG W2353V LCD monitor

Comments (0)

lg-monitor-W53-Large.pngIs your PC monitor looking a little jaded? Well how about an instant revamp. We have a really tasty looking LG W2353 23inch LCD monitor to give away to the first person whose name we pull out in our electronic draw.

All you need to do is answer the following question and then email us your answer here

What does LG stand for?

We'll be randomly choosing the winner on September 30th.

So what are you waiting for?

Here are the details of the monitor and the T and Cs are underneath

HD Ready 1080p
Full HD contents should be displayed on a Full HD resolution display to maintain their original details. With a display supporting HD 1920x1080 pixels, users can enjoy a perfect visual experience.

Cinema mode

Video clips uploaded on web pages are in low resolution and pixels are distorted when the clips are viewed on full screen. On the other hand, watching the clips in their original size would mean being exposed to various distractive elements such as banners and text. Just like a movie theatre, Cinema Mode creates an ideal environment for viewing video clips posted online by dimming the areas excluded in your mouse drag and helping you focus on what you are watching.

Energy Star Rated

Energy Star rated products use less energy and save users money on their utility bills and are better for the environment

HDMI Input
A single, all-digital cable input which makes it easy to connect and integrate all your digital systems, including cable/satellite boxes and games.

Auto Bright Sensor

LG's Smart Monitor's Auto Bright function has a Bright Sensor that measures the amount of light in the area surrounding the monitor. After analyzing the brightness of ambient light and the data source, the monitor signals the backlight to create an optimized brightness that reproduces a clear image without causing eye strain.

Live Sensor
Live Sensor recognizes hands approaching the monitor and automatically turns on by a proximity sensor. This feature saves energy and contributes to the product life.

Time Control

The Time Control reminds you to take some time to rest by signaling with the power button light according to the interval set by the user.

win-kit.jpg
I just hate those competitions with one big prize. Don't know about you, but I never win. So, when the good people of Kingston Technology offered a whopping great memory card kit to give away, I said, "no." Instead, we have a whole 30 of the suckers as competition prizes except just a little smaller.

The Prize

30 x 4GB Kingston Multi-Kits. Only one kit can be won per person and that kit includes:

  • 4GB microSD card
  • SD card adaptor
  • mini-SD adaptor
  • USB reader

How to win

Good question. I hadn't actually thought that far ahead. Send your entry to our Tech Digest competitions email, I can tell you that much. And, as for the question...hmmm...tricky...ah, yes! I have it. The question is this:

The Nokia N97 is coming out very soon indeed and it looks like it's going to have more memory potential than an other handset so far. So, exactly how much memory could the N97 possibly have at its highest as of what is commercially available today? Not as easy as it sounds, that one. So, do your research and let me know.

Get your answers over to me before the first light of day on Wednesday 3rd June and I'll pick 30 e-mails out of the hat at random. Make sure you include your name and address, so I can send out your prize should you be chosen. Ts & Cs over leaf.

Yoko Ono judges Twitter poetry competition

Comments (17)

yoko-ono-exhibition_801095c.jpgHigh-culture monolith, Yoko Ono, will begin judging the first ever Twitter poetry competition which started today.

London commuters are being encouraged to submit haiku poems about the British summertime, and those judged good enough will appear on the largest digital display at Kings Cross station and on Twitter.

Scottish poet, Jackie Kay, who will also judge the competition said: "I liked the idea of doing something that combined an old form with a very new form.

"People could do a haiku on the way to work and it's a good way to exercise the brain. It's like the sudoku."

Whether the crowded commute on the tube is the most conducive environment for creativity is yet to be seen, and with a measly 128 characters to work with after the @kingsplace prefix, budding poets might find their burgeoning verse stymied.

But, getting into the spirit of things, I had a pop at one:

I recall summer,
The sun between may and july,
When I forgot how to write.

Not too shabby I think you'll agree. Why not leave your comments as a Haiku? That'd be nice.

bento-comp-eds.jpg

Hands up who wants to win an iPhone 3G? Well, the good news is that not one but two of you with your hands in the air are going to do just that because the chaps and chapesses over at FileMaker are running a competition to give away two of the Apple handsets fully loaded with the latest FileMaker app, Bento for iPhone and iPod touch. But don't worry, everyone else, because there's five £15 iTunes Gift Cards up for grabs too.

Bento is all about organising your business and personal life in the kind of way that I regularly fail to do on my own. You can use it to keep a track of your expenses, diet plan, digital media, vehicle maintenance, event planning or just simple stuff like to-do lists and adding more details to your iPhone contacts list.

gadget-show-live.jpg
Ladies, gentlemen; gadget boys and gadget gals, the Gadget Show Live 2009 is officially sold out. I have just been informed by the event organisers that there are precisely zero pairs of tickets left for both the Super Theatre and even access to the main show.

To those that have their hands clutched around a pair like Charlie Bucket and Grandpa Joe, then congratulations, for those that haven't, well, there might just be a competition on Tech Digest very soon indeed because I happen to have a bunch burning a hole in my drawer at the moment and I prefer my drawers without holes in.

Keep 'em peeled and I'll see you down at the NEC at the How To Theatre along with the rest of the Shiny Tech Crew from 17th-19th April. Good luck.

resident-evil-competition.pngFan of Resident Evil 5? Fan of body parts? Fan of central London? Combine your passions tomorrow morning, Thursday March 12th, as Capcom leaves miscellaneous body parts strewn around the area near Trafalgar Square.

Entrants will be required to find as many body parts as possible, and take them to Westminster bridge by 11am, where you have to hold them over your head and shout "Kijuju!". Points will be allocated for each body part found - 2 for an arm, 2 for a leg, 3 for a torso and 5 for a head.

The players with the most points at 11am win a "trip of a lifetime" to Africa. Tech Digest will be there in force, trying to win it for ourselves, so we'll see you there!

It's ridiculously easy to enter. Go here (Competition is now closed), fill in the form, and hit okay. Go do it now, in fact. Imagine how jolly your little kid (or you, if you're sprog-free) will feel on Christmas day when he or she unwraps it.
