Philips HF3480_3_big wakup light.jpgEven though the days are slowly getting longer, many of us are finding it difficult to open our eyes and get out of bed in the morning. To make the waking up ritual a little bit easier, Tech Digest has team up with partner site Black Dog Tribe (a social place where you can read more about mental health issues such as depression and join in on the conversation to break the stigma) and Philips to give away a Wake-up Light to two lucky Tribe supporters.

The Wake-up Light has been designed to help those 2 million people in the UK and Ireland who, according to SAD.org.uk, suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - a medical condition known to reduce energy levels, even cause depression, as a result of light deficiency.

This latest model combines the functionality of a SAD lamp with the traditional functions of an alarm clock radio. Unlike a conventional alarm clock or even mobile phone which relies on an earth-shattering sound like a fog horn to blast you out of your slumbers, the Philips wake up light does things in a slightly more civilised way.

The 'sunrise' mode means that the light comes on gently around half an hour before you need to get up by gradually increasing its intensity until you wake up naturally - much like you would if the sun shone in through the curtains. Then if you are still not awake after the sunrise period (this can be adjusted between 20 and 40 minutes), the alarm switches on. Choose between various sounds like a cow mooing in the fields or birds tweeting in the forest, or simply choose tune in to your FM radio station of choice or download various wake up tones from Philips's website here.

The Wake-up Light retails for between £84.99 and £132.77 and you can find out more about it here.

To enter all we ask you to do is go to the Black Dog Tribe Facebook Page, Like us and tell us in the comments who you would most like to wake up next to tomorrow, Valentine's Day, 14th February.

The competition closes at 23:59 on 14 February 2012.

orbitsound-speaker-bar.jpg

Today we're launching an easy to enter mobile photography competition with our friends at Orbitsound to kick off Instagram week and give one reader the chance to win a fabulous T12v3 speaker bar as well as lots of runner-up prizes that we have dug out from our cupboard including iPhone cases, iPhone lenses, games and other iPhone accessories.

It's bright and sunny today, but there's a chill in the air and crispy orange leaves on the ground, so we want you to take a photo with an Autumnal theme, then share it on Twitter along with the hash tag #ShinyAutumn.

We'll be looking for original and inspiring photos that are a little bit different and really capture what Autumn means to you. So it gives you free reign to be super creative! Don't forget Halloween is a big part of Autumn too, so if you'd prefer to take a photo of something scary rather than something golden brown, shoot away.

Once all of the entries are in, we'll pick the best 20 images and create an 'Instagram photography magazine.' This will be available as a free iPad/digital magazine as well as a paid-for printed magazine at the end of the competition. A video of the best images will also be uploaded and made into a video on YouTube.

autumn-instagram.jpg

How to enter

To enter, simply take a photo that represents Autumn for you (you can enter as many times as you like). You can submit a photo you have already taken too.

You can edit it and add an Instagram filter to it if you want, or just leave it how it is.

Then share your image on Twitter along with the hash tag #ShinyAutumn.

The competition is alongside our Instagram week, so you can enter via Instagram if you have an iPhone, but if you don't then just share your photo to Twitter with whatever other photo sharing service you use, like TwitPic or PicPlz, just be sure to add the hash tag to your tweet!

We will then choose 20 images to go through to the final stage and will then judge which we feel looks good and gives us an original perspective of Autumn and find one ultimate winner.

Prize

One winner will get an award winning Orbitsound T12v3 soundbar, which produces incredible surround sound, thanks to the patented 'spatial sound' technology. 19 runners-up will get a random phone-related lucky dip prize, we have some cases, lenses and stands.

Closing date

The competition will continue for two weeks, so be sure to get all of your entries taken and tweeted with the hash tag #ShinyAutumn by 5pm on the 1st November 2011.

Terms and Conditions

  1. You can enter as many photos as you want.
  2. All entries must be tweeted and contain the hash tag #ShinyAutumn.
  3. The competition closes at 5pm on the 5pm on the 1st November 2011. No entries will be considered after then.
  4. This competition is open to residents of the UK and Ireland.
  5. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  6. The winning entry will be the one which is most original, visually appealing and in keeping with the Autumn theme.
  7. The winner will be notified within seven days of the closing date.
  8. All prizes are non transferable and there are no cash alternatives.
  9. All images submitted must be the work of the individual submitting them and must not have been published elsewhere.
  10. Only include close-up photographs of people in your entry if they have consented to having their photograph taken. It is the entrant's responsibility to ensure they have permission to include the subject in their entry.
  11. The copyright for the image remains with the entrant. However, by entering a photo into the competition, you give ShinyShiny permission to use your photos for other promotional purposes and include them in any other material, such as on ShinyShiny, in an iPad magazine and in an actual printed magazine.
  12. Submission of an entry will be taken to mean acceptance of these terms and conditions.

LG play to.jpg
LG's Optimus 7 is one of the best Windows Phone 7 devices on the market right now, packing in top spec features at an affordable price. One the best of these features is Play To which is LG's version of a fantastic new technology called DLNA networking. Here's a quick guide to how it works.

DLNA stands for Digital Living Network Alliance. In its simplest terms, DLNA networking means that you'll be able to transfer pictures, music and video files from one DLNA enabled device to another wirelessly. The LG Optimus 7 enables you to do that via its Play To feature. Firstly you need to find out what devices in your home are compatible with Play To. There are different types including computers, televisions, games consoles, printers and more.

There's no need to connect your LG Optimus 7 with wires to a Play To compatible PC or TV, it works wirelessly. You simply go into the Play To section of the phone, find the content you want to transfer wirelessly (images, video etc), choose which device that you are going to send the content to and then you simply flick the content and it transfers to the other device's screen or speakers.

There are no limits to the number of Play To devices your LG Optimus 7 handset can link to, allowing for simple and fast access to all manner of content on your smartphone. With so many devices now DLNA/Play To compliant, LG's Optimus 7 is bang up to date and truly designed to make your life easier.

The LG Optimus 7 is the company's flagship Windows 7 Phone. It has all the goodies that Microsoft insists on as part of the Windows 7 standard - like a five mega pixel camera and plenty of storage - but to that spec LG has added a whole lot more. Here are five features that caught our eye.

scansearch.jpg

ScanSearch - So far the LG Optimus 7 is the only Windows 7 Phone to boast this really cool feature. ScanSearch is LG's version of Augmented Reality. Using the LG Optimus 7's camera, GPS and web connected abilities all at once, the ScanSearch AR app can help you find the hottest nightspots, best restaurants and useful amenities around you. Just enter what you're searching for and watch as the smartphone screen becomes an interactive map, updating in real-time and giving you directions to your location of choice.

Play To - Another very cool feature the LG Optimus 7 lets you wirelessly transfer songs, pictures and video files from one device to another using its Play To feature. Syncing up with PCs, TVs and other Play To compatible devices, you'll be able to send and share your handset's files without ever needing to use a cabled connection. You just go to the Play To feature on the phone, chose the content you want to transfer and flick it to transfer it. It is neat and very simple.

panorama.jpg

Panorama Shot - Panorama shot options have been available on cameras for a while now, but very few mobile phones have them as part of their spec. The Optimus 7's camera panorama mode is not only great for creating extended view images, but it also very simple to use. It enables you to stitch together multiple photos to create one seamless widescreen shot.

Exclusive LG apps - The LG Optimus 7 has many other cool apps which are available from the LG app store. One very cool app is the Photo Stylist option. This helps you create even more interesting photos by using filters. So for example you can use the Lomography filters to make the image look as if it were taken by a Lomo camera. Alternatively use Mono to make the shot black and white or Rainbow to create a cute image that looks as if it has been taken by a toy camera. Like all LG apps Photo Stylist is very simple to set up and use.

Other great free apps available from the LG apps store include Workout Track which enables runners to record track speed, distance and calories burned and Voice to Text which transcribe your words and turn them into text.

lg optimus.jpg

Office on mobile - Whether we like it or not, we all have to use our mobiles to do a little work. LG's Optimus 7 makes this simple by including a version of Microsoft's Office on board. You go to Documents on the phone and you can then view, edit and even create a host of document types including Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The phone's touch screen makes it very simple to move between the documents quickly too.

And did we mention that we had six to give away...

Just go here and fill in the survey

Here's what you could win. LG's first handset to sport Microsoft's brand-spanking new Windows Phone 7 OS is the Optimus 7. Here's a quick guide to the handset's main features.

Packing in a 3.8-inch, 800 x 480, capacitive touchscreen, the Optimus 7 is a zippy little handset thanks to the 1GHz processor it has under the hood. 512MB of RAM makes switching between apps smooth, while 16GB of built-in storage allows for plenty of tunes, photos and videos to be stored on the phone. An accelerometer, compass and GPS are built in too for swift Bing Maps navigation, while web connectivity is handled by 3G and Wi-Fi connections.

A 5MP camera sits on the back, with each snap taken instantly ready to share with your friends online. A panoramic photo mode allows you to stitch together wide vista shots, while there is also 720p HD video recording on board.

The Windows Phone 7 operating system that features in the Optimus 7 is visually one of the smoothest OS's on the block. Tiles and app hubs are an intuitive way to organise the many features of the phone, with slick animated transitions between each different area. Video game fans will also appreciate the integration with Microsoft's Xbox Live online community; link your Xbox 360 Gamertag and you'll have access to leaderboards and achievements that carry across to both devices.

Augmented reality is set to be the next big thing in smartphone technology, using your phone's camera, web connection and GPS in tandem to overlay information about the world around you onto your handset's screen. ScanSearch is the Optimus 7's first AR app. Unique to LG Windows Phone 7 devices, ScanSearch features a database of local restaurants and services, searchable through just a few taps of your fingers. Decide on where you want to go and how you want to get there (walk, run or drive), and then the app will direct you towards your destination onscreen. With a growing database, ScanSearch also offers real-time information on banking, entertainment, weather forecasts and many, many other useful facts. The Optimus 7 is the only device supporting AR functionality that uses the Windows Phone 7 platform.

If you don't fancy having to tap out text and email messages, never fear: the LG Optimus 7 has you covered here too. Its Voice-to-Text feature will act like your own personal PA, recognising your voice as you speak into it, jotting down words so you don't have to, ready to be sent off to your pals.

The LG Optimus 7 is also one of the first smartphones to offer DLNA networking. Tied into the Play-To app, this will let you share videos, photos and sound files wirelessly with any other nearby DLNA compatible device. Whole folders worth of songs and photos can fill your handset without needing to attach any wires, even letting you stream HD video content to compatible DLNA certified flatscreen TVs.

Finally the phone also boasts a very efficient and powerful, battery which utilizes LG's own battery algorithm to maximize efficiency. By offering 1500 mAh, the largest battery capacity among WP7 devices, it delivers a reliable and stress-free experience for consumers. It also delivers the best talk and standy time of any Windows Mobiel 7 handset - Talk time: 480 min / Standby: 416 hrs

The LG Optimus 7 is an exciting new handset riding the wave of a very impressive new OS from Microsoft. If Android and Apple handsets don't float your boat, the LG Optimus 7 is well worth a look.
