MWC 2008 Video Preview: NTT DoCoMO fitness handset

Comments (0)

The things Ash does for a story! In this video, he takes a look at NTT DoCoMo's prototype fitness handset, which can measure bodily functions such as your heart rate, body fat, or act as a pedometer. But which function does he choose to test?

Erm, the halitosis measure. Yick.

LG is cranking out the touch-screens like there's no tomorrow, with the KF700 having not one, not two, but three touch-sensitive displays.

Being touted by LG as a multimedia handset, the three touch-related input methods - the 3.0" touch-sensitive screen, an alpha-numeric keypad and shortcut dial. HSDPA connectivity, video playback and a 3-megapixel camera are all added bonuses.

It'll be available mid-March for the whole of Europe, with the rest of the world to follow.

Take a look under the jump for the KF510 and KF600, also from LG.

Slightly bizarre, but that's where NTT DoCoMo excels. This mobile works as a key for your door, opening it with RFID technology, either when within proximity or remotely.

MWC 2008 Video Preview: Nokia's N96 mobile phone

Comments (3)

Thank goodness for video cameras! Just this morning we reported on Nokia's N96 handset, then pitted it against the predecessor, the N95. Welcome, video footage of said model!

Nokia

Nokia has announced two new handsets boasting a collection of advanced navigation and multimedia features. Click on any of the images for higher resolution shots.

Nokia_6210_Navigator.jpgThe Nokia 6210 Navigator is the company's first phone to incorporate GPS with an integrated compass, allowing for a much more advanced navigation service for pedestrian use. Bundled with the newly announced Nokia Maps 2.0, the phone utilises an accelerometer (yes, made popular by that other phone) which should allow for accurate guidance based on changes in the user's orientation. Mind you, I wonder if you'll have to employ a silly walk in order to ensure that it always works?

The 6210 works on 3.5G networks, and takes advantage of that by integrating navigation with the Web to give information and contact details about points of interest. The phone can also be used just as easily as a sat-nav in car, with one-touch navigation and the usual features you'd expect from a dedicated system.

It also features A-GPS, and comes with a 1GB memory card pre-loaded with local maps. Additionally, multimedia isn't forgotten, with a 3.2 megapixel camera, MP3 player, and FM radio rounding things off.

The LiMo Foundation looks set to be a major thorn in Google's Android side, with a couple of major announcements tipped to occur at MWC.

For those unfamiliar with the LiMo Foundation, it's an alliance of manufacturers formed over a year ago, which has the same common aim as the Open Handset Alliance spearheaded by Google, of creating open mobile software platforms.

"[LiMo] is a very practical initiative, but also a deeply philosophical one, based upon the belief that openness in handsets delivers value to consumers," Morgan Gillis, LiMo's executive director, said recently about the alliance, which includes massive manufacturers such as Motorola, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, NTT DoCoMo, Vodafone and Matsushita. 18 handsets have already been announced for the platform, with Motorola's Motorokr and Razr2 being such mentionables.

texas-instruments-google-android-phone.jpgGood old Texas Instruments, which isn't just there for the boring things in life like calculators, is revealing its Google Android software developments at the Mobile World Congress. Which is happening today. It's happening RIGHT NOW, in fact.

Texas Instruments will also be demonstrating an Android-powered handset based on its OMAP850 processor - a clever little multi-core chip for mobile devices that also includes Wilreless LAN and Bluetooth tech as standard. TI's prototype Google Phone will allow "one button access" to stuff like your web browser, email and no doubt the omnipresent Google Maps.

Also apparently showing off Android work-in-progress devices and "solutions" at the show today are ARM, Marvell, Qualcomm, NEC and ST Microelectronics.

No doubt Susi will be along with a video of some of them later. She better had be, or there'll be trouble. Keep F5-ing, people. We'll see what Google's about to unleash on the world very, very soon.

NVIDIA has a big stand at Mobile World Congress, including a concept handset showing off a user-interface powered by the company's new APX 2500 mobile CPU And I'm not getting over-excited when I say it looks awesome. Scrolling, zooming, transparent overlays, the works. Check the demo running on a big screen:

Don't worry, I've got a video of it actually running on the handset too, in a minute. NVIDIA whacked the handset together in a matter of weeks for this show, to unveil the new mobile CPU.

The UI is designed to show what'll be capable with the next generation of mobile handsets. "What this shows is the iPhone didn't go far enough," says NVIDIA's Oscar Clark.

With Nokia finally announcing the N96, it's time to take a look at what new features they've added since the N95. (Video preview of the Nokia N96)

Dimensions

Boring but necessary are dimensions. The N96 isn't going to take up much more room in your pocket than the N95 -- it's marginally bigger and slightly heavier, but we'll forgive that for the extra features.

nokia_n96_1.jpg

Display

You get a very slightly larger display on the N96, 2.8 inches versus 2.6" on the N95, but it's still a QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) 16 million colour-capable LCD TFT.

Video and Imaging

The N96's "video centre" allows access to Internet videos and can play back a wide variety of standard file formats, including Flash.

Shooting videos is still at VGA (640x480) 30fps, just as the N95, and the camera is still a five megapixel with Carl-Zeiss lens and built-in flash.

The N96 now gives access to Live TV, where DVB-H broadcasts are available.

Would you believe that HTC has signed up TomTom, and packed their Navigator 6 GPS system into the P3470, announced today at MWC?

Sadly it's only got EDGE support, but this is because it's 'affordable', a fairly entry-level handset which isn't really reflected with an entry-level price: this baby is €449.

Still, the lightweight candybar features a large (2.8") QVGA touchscreen (similar to the Touch), and meagre 2-megapixel sensor in the camera, albeit with macro focus. An internal memory of 256MB (expandable with a microSD card), 128MB in RAM, a 200MHz CPU and Bluetooth, it'll be available in Europe late February, exclusive to Orange within the United Kingdom.

Is it safe to say that Samsung's Soul handset is one of the more exciting models from MWC so far? It certainly seems to be the phone everyone's talking about, including - as you'd imagine - Samsung's Marketing Manager, who Ash managed to squeeze a couple of minutes out of to explain just why it's one of the hottest handsets of the year. Take a look at the video above, and try to dodge the marketing spin...

After making such a vast loss in the mobile part of its business last year, you might've expected Motorola to come out KICKING and possibly SCREAMING at this year's Mobile World Congress 2008 show. But no.

It revealed the wi-fi-enhanced Z6W, which is an upgraded version of the Z6M. That's the one on the left.

motorola-z6w-w181-w161.jpg

And the two mobiles on the right - the W161 and W181 - are officially classified as "affordable". No one wants a phone that's officially classified as affordable! We want phones that are cutting-edge and unattainable, phones packed with things we won't ever use - not this sort of featureless thing parents buy for their kids.

Clearly those rumours that Motorola's looking to offload it's phone wing are true if this is all it can be bothered to bring to the year's biggest mobile innovation show.

I don't have to point out that the Zeemote JS1 is obviously a gaming peripheral of some sort to you lot, but what I should say is that it's similar to a joystick for your mobile phone, communicating via Bluetooth and measuring just 95x35x20mm and weighing only 47g. Certainly small enough to slip into your pocket for long train rides.

The best thing is though, Zeemote has announced compatible games include Eidos Mobile's Tomb Raider Anniversary and Sonic The Hedgehog part one.

Nokia's suddenly entered the MWC game, with their N96 causing a huge buzz over in Barcelona.

It's got a - get this - 16GB internal memory capacity, alongside a microSD slot. Perfect for storing photos taken on the 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics lens, flash and video light, and videos which are taken at 30 frames per second. The ability to geo-tag your photos using the A-GPS system is also touted by Nokia as being a major draw to the handset.

Dedicated media keys and integrated 3D stereo speakers will allow for some nice music playback, otherwise with a DVB-H TV tuner you can watch telly and even store up to 40 hours of it, or other MPEG-4, WMV and Flash files.

As you've come to expect with high-end Nokia handsets, HSDPA is included, alongside their own Maps and City Guides features.

We've been told to expect it around Autumn for €550 exclusive of taxes and subsidies.
