fm-2012-thumb.jpgGaming's premier football management simulator makes its annual, welcome return to the iPod Touch, iPad and iPhone today. Budding Alex Fergussons can get their hands on Football Manager 2012 Handheld right now for some on-the-go footy fiddling.

Though it's jam-packed with extensive player details and reams of customisable tactics, the handheld edition of the veritable sim is aimed more at quick-fire sessions, letting you drop in and out of the action while on the daily commute or killing time on the terraces on match day.

As such, as well as standard league modes Football Manager 2012 Handheld also offers challenge modes, pitting your skills against a number of pre-set scenarios. For instance, you've got "The Saviour Cometh" scenario, which challenges you to save your favourite team floundering at the bottom of the table mid-season, and "The Invincibles" which requires you to remain unbeaten for an entire season in order to win.

That's not to say the game is without depth; 12 nations and their leagues can be browsed for players or teams to direct, with the in-game databse brought bang up to date to reflect the season's changes.

The UI has been tweaked here and there too to make navigating the many options as simple as possible when guiding your team to the top.

Grab the app today from iTunes for £6.99. It's compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPads, and requires iOS 3.0 or later to run.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you insist on fixing it, don't make 24-carat gold your primary tool.

The tech makeover specialists at Computer Choppers have been at it once again, tainting the sleek lines of a MacBook Pro by covering it with 24-carat gold and more diamonds than in Lil Wayne's dentures.

Even the gold itself is dropped down several "Bling-chic" levels thanks to a paisley finish.

As ever, if you have to ask the price, you couldn't afford it even if you tore out and sold your own still-beating Apple-fanboy heart.

Scroll down to check it out, as well as a few shots of the black MacBook Pro blinged-out alternative:

Smell-o-Vision? Remember that? The idea that you could smell what you were watching on TV? Well the concept may be set for a comeback thanks to a small French company called Olf-Action.

They're getting ready to display at the Lisbon Design Show a nostril-bothering gadget called the SMELLIT, designed to replicate the smell of certain on-screen scenarios. Though little is known about SMELLIT beyond a few nifty design renders, the company have already had one roll of the pongy dice in cinemas, bringing "Odoravision" to a few screens to accompany a few films with retro-fitted smell tracks.

Does it work? We're not sure. Do we want it? We're even less sure of that. Still, if any eventual product looks half as good as the renders displayed below, it sure beats the old Noel's House Party smelly scratchcard trick that UK readers of a certain age are certain to remember anyway.

And, looking at the "scent list" Olf Action are touting, we'd be lying if we didn't say we aren't intrigued to find out what the "smell of the good mood" is.

Dyson are preparing to do what they did for hoovers and fans for fan heaters too this Christmas, after last night revealing their Dyson Hot luxury heating system.

Using the company's Air Multiplier Technology, the Dyson Hot heats a room qickly and evenly by drawing air through a mixed flow impeller and then accelerating it through a 2.5mm aperture set within a loop amplifier.

Setting a temperature between 1 and 37 degrees celsius, the Dyson Hot monitors room temperature and only powers up if it detects a drop in heat, which should go some way towards saving on costly heating bills.

It took 22 engineers three years to complete the project.

dyson-fan-thumb.jpg

"Other fan heaters rely on inefficient motors or dust friendly grills," explained Sir James Dyson.

"As the heat rises you're left with a partially heated room and a worrying burning smell. Dyson engineers have developed a heater that produces no smell and heats the whole room".

The Dyson Hot is available at Dyson.co.uk now and from John Lewis later this month before going on nationwide sale in October. Expect to pay around £269.99.

What do you call a dinosaur's dog? Rex.

What do you call a blind dinosaur's dog? Doyouthinkhesaurus Rex.

Not that any of these dapper dino pooches are having any trouble spotting this season's key canine fashion trends. This year's labrador look is all about scales and tails, as dog owners deck their pets out in Cretaceous costumes.

From waif-raptor chic to plus-size Stegosaurus jackets, there's something for all breeds and sizes. There's even the odd mammal costume in their too for good measure.

Admittedly, there's only a tenuous tech link here (er...you can buy them online at www.partycity.com?). But what has been seen cannot be unseen, and I laughed so much when I saw this that I couldn't help myself but share them for some Friday fun.

Razer Blade.jpgRazer were not messing around when they said they had "something big" to announce to PC gamers on August 26th. They've just revealed the Razer Blade, possibly the most exciting gaming laptop we've ever seen at Tech Digest.

We'd assumed that the August 26th reveal would have been that of the Razer Switchblade. Turns out we were only half wrong, as Razer seem to have incorporated many of that CES 2011 prototype's ideas into an altogether superior gaming laptop.

The most obviously impressive feature here is the adaptive keyboard, using what's now reffered to as the Switchblade UI. With one section to the right of the laptop sectioned off, it again uses miniature LCD screens that double up as input keys, changing their symbols dynamically depending on the game you are playing. Fire up Call of Duty for instance and you may get weapon hotkeys with their correponding images, or load up World of Warcraft and they will turn into spells.

Then there is the touch pad that sits underneath the LCD screens. Again, as an LCD panel itself it's not your average touchpad, instead seeming more like a multi-touch smartphone screen than a traditional laptop touchpad. Plug in a mouse and that screen changes its use again, offering extra information on the game you are playing, such as unit stats in RTS games or health bars, maps and the like in FPS games.

Things get even better when you get heavily into the tech specs:

2.8GHz Intel®Core™i7 2640M Processor
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 Memory
17.3" LED Backlit Display (1920x1080)
NVIDIA GeForce®GT 555M with NVIDIA®Optimus™Technology
2GB Dedicated GDDR5 Video Memory
Built-in HD Webcam
Integrated 60Wh Battery
320GB 7200rpm SATA HDD
Wireless Network 802.11 b/g/n Compatible
16.81" (Width) x 10.9" (Depth) x 0.88" (Height); 6.97lbs (Weight)

Not too shabby for a gaming laptop, eh? It's even more remarkable when you consider it's all packed into a chassis only 88mm thick, making the whole unit far more portable than rival machines.

"The Razer Blade was designed to give gamers a laptop they could truly use on the go," said Min-Liang Tan, CEO and Creative Director, Razer.

"Its sleek, lightweight aluminum construction makes it the thinnest 17-inch gaming laptop available today.

"The Switchblade User Interface on the Razer Blade is a revolutionary innovation that truly defines the new standard for gaming experiences on a laptop."

A truly exciting product then. The Switchblade UI looks superb, but developers will really have to put effort in to make the most of it. Whether developers will spend the time to add functionality for one unique laptop remains to be seen, but it's certainly looking promising. Here's hoping it plays as good as it looks.

No word on pricing or availablilty yet, but click below for more images of the Razer Blade.

The iPad 2 is barely out of nappies, but in the fast moving world of tech all eyes are already on what Apple plans to do next with their tablet brand. Designer Guilherme Schasiepen has a few ideas, which he's thrown into these new concept designs for a possible iPad 3.

The most notable inclusion from Schasiepen is the often rumoured Retina display. First featured in the iPhone 4, it's been a long-rumoured component of every iPad variant since the original launched last year. With rumours once again rearing their heads, could it be third time lucky for the high-res display?

Stereo speakers and new antennas are teased by Schasiepen, who also envisions future iPads with curved glass backs as oppossed to the brushed aluminium of current versions. The solid white and black casings are strking as a result, while at only 0.29 inches thick Schasiepen believes we'll also get updated 5MP rear cameras with LED flash and 1080p recording, as well as a HD FaceTime front camera.

Futur Fusion helix.jpgWe're suckers for robots, cyborgs and visions of the future here at Tech Digest, so we jumped at the chance to get a closer look at the new Futur Fusion exhibition taking place in London's Covent Garden area. A showcase of sculpture, illustration and photography, the exhibition explores issues surrounding nanotechnology, bio-technology and sustainability, with a healthy dose of sci-fi chic thrown in for good measure.

Collecting work from illustrator Sebastian Clark, photographer Stephane Grand and sculptor Dominic Elvin (whose previous work includes the world famous design of Camden's Cyberdog store) it's a vibrant, futuristic exhibition galaxies apart from the sort of work you'd find in the Tate Britain.

"I'm obsessed with frontier science," enthused Elvin, "so I try to incorporate its ideas into my work."

"Isaac Asimov (pioneering sci-fi author - Ed.) was my original inspiration though, going back to when I was 12 or 13. My father gave me the Asimov "Foundation" books, and they transported me to this incredible world, filling me with ideas that never left my mind."

As much as the exhibition revels in visions of the future, the artists exhibiting also have one eye firmly fixed on the present. Specifically, Futur Fusion also looks at the way we're still failing to take green issues seriously.

As a result, much of Elvin's work uses recycled and reclaimed materials, the percentage of which in each work he proudly presents alongside his pieces.

SANY0108.JPG

"We're trying to show people that recycled art pieces don't have to be old washing machines looking like clunky robots, it can be really polished and cool. It's also about seeing materials in a different way - rubbish doesn't always have to be landfill waste," said Elvin.

Likewise, photographer Stephane Grand's work often acts to highlight the wasteful, destructive nature of consumerism, with a playful installation called "Mr Splatz" mimicking a chalk-line crime scene with garbage materials.

Despite the serious issues explored, the Futur Fusion team still exude playful enthusiasm for the works on show, keen to stress that the exhibit is fun and suitable for the whole family.

"Yesterday we had a big group of fifty kids with their teachers come in. They went crazy, you'd have thought they were at Disney Land! The teachers were really positive too as they're increasingly teaching about sustainability in lessons," said Elvin.

"For me that sort of response is fantastic, because they're exactly the people we're doing this for. They're the next generation, and they're going to have to pick up the shit left by this generation."

The exhibition kicked off on June 13th and runs until Saturday 18th June 2011. The Futur Fusion collection can be found at I.N.C Space, 9-13 Grape Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 8ED and is open to the public, free of charge, from 9am to 7pm.

For more info on the event, visit www.facebook.com/futurfusion. Alternatively, send the Futur Fusion team a message via Twitter by using the #FuturFusion hashtag.

Logitech have entered the busy tablet accessory market, launching a trio of new products today compatible with iOS and Android slate devices.

Though far from being a perfect game (as you'll discover from reading our full review) LA Noire is without doubt as good looking as a sultry Hollywood femme fatale.

From the superb art direction that sees LA circa. 1947 vibrantly brought to life to the MotionScan technology used to create the most realistic characters in the history of video games, LA Noire is a real visual feast.

We've collected a handful of screenshots from the game for your viewing pleasure below. Be sure to check out our full review of LA Noire to find out whether or not the game plays as well as it looks.

Comng across like the bastard lovechild of an Xbox 360 controller and the as-yet-unreleased Sony NGP handheld is the iReadyGo, a new handheld device that's doing the rounds on the CnGBA forums.

Running an undisclosed build of Android off a 1GHz chip (likely an ARM Cortex A8) it pretty badly apes the Sony NGP's design, twin sticks and all. An 800 x 480 5-inch OLED is the display of choice, while those input buttons will look mighty familiar to any fans of Microsoft's game consoles.

Elsewhere in the device you'll find a USB port, which commentors are suggesting may be used as dongle port for the "supported" Wi-Fi and 3G connections.

That's all we know so far on this intriguing handheld. Scroll down for some shots of the device.

htc-sensation-1.jpg

HTC have revealed their latest flagship smartphone at a press preview in London today. Pretty much a spiritual successor the lucious Desire HD, the newly revealed HTC Sensation is likely to top gadget-most wanted lists when it launches in Europe and the UK sometime in May.

For want of avoiding a pun, the handset's spec sheet is looking pretty "sensational". Packing in the latest version of HTC's nifty Sense UI overlay (with tweaks including a 360-degree hompage carousel and app screen locking), the Android 2.3.3 handset is rocking a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 8260 chipset, as well as 768 MB of RAM.

The 4.3 inch screen is also looking great; running at 960 x 540 pixels in a 16:9 aspect, it's finished with ultra-strong Gorilla Glass and protected with a curved bezel that means the screen will never make contact with rough surfaces when placed face down.

Overall the phone measures up at 126.1 x 65.4 x 11.3mm and a fairly weighty 148g. The extra bulk is likely down to the 1520mAh battery onboard, the highest capacity battery HTC have used to date, which should go someway towards offsetting the tragic battery life of the comparably-sized Desire HD.

Other features include full 1080p HD recording and 8MP still image shooting from the rear camera, and 640 x 480 video capture from a front facing sensor too. A HDMI out port will let you push videos to your flatscreen TV via an additional adapter, while the HTC Watch movie download portal will come pre-installed.

Some argued that apart from the HTC Flyer, the company's MWC showing in February was a little prosaic, but it seems all was being held back for today's big Sensation reveal. Providing they've fixed the frankly attrocious battery issues that plagued the otherwise-superb Desire HD, HTC will be on to a real winner here.

Jules Verne would be proud of Richard Branson's latest venture: the Virgin Oceanic submarine.

The project aims to explore "the last frontiers of our own Blue Planet: the very bottom of our seas". Google is even involved with its mapping technology:

"Using their mapping technology, Google hopes to chronicle the dives as they happen and share discoveries, footage and record breaking achievements with the world" Richard Branson said in a statement.

Along with explorer Chris Welsh, Branson intends to take a solo piloted submarine to the deepest points in each of the world's five oceans. It is the first time anyone has ever attempted to do this. It includes diving into the 36,201ft deep Mariana Trench, and the 28,232ft deep Puerto Rico Trench.

Unreached depths
It may not be possible to go this deep - and if Branson is successful there is no way of knowing what is down there. Millions of year's worth of biological "soup" is expected to be the bottom of these deep trenches though.

Branson's submarine utilises the latest in composite technology, including a unique wing to "fly" within the Ocean environment.

Branson said:

"What if I were to tell you about a planet, inhabited by 'intelligent' beings that had, in the 21st Century, physically explored 0% of its deepest points and mapped only 3% of its oceans by unmanned craft, when 70% of that planet's surface was made up of water. Then I tried to convince you that only 10% of the life forms inhabiting that unknown world, are known to those on the surface - you'd think I'd fallen asleep watching the latest sci-fi blockbuster! Then you discover that planet is Earth..."

Well we can't have that can we! Bon Voyage, Sir Richard!

Yesterday's excellent Mother's Day feature from TechDigest editor Gerald is a tough act to follow, but here we go anyway: Ten small tokens of affection for mum this Sunday. And these are things she may actually like too - nothing mumsy about this stuff. A gift in itself, that!

PS - Father's Day is on 19th June.

Hmm...I quite like the ring of "Fantasy Friday". If this wasn't a tech blog I'd have elves and goblins on here all the time, but alas, it is. You're going to have to make do with these 6 new awesome screenshots from the upcoming PS3, Xbox 360 and PC RPG, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The follow up to 2006's stellar Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, it launches worldwide on November 11, 2011.

HTC Pyramid specs appear in spy shots

Comments (5)

The HTC Pyramid, the Taiwanese smartphone maestros rumoured new flagship handset, has popped up in a series of new leaked spy shots at XDA-Developers.com. Take a look at the new device by clicking below.

Not merely some shots of the Pyramid's build, the leaked photos also reveal software and hardware specifications of the forthcoming device.

According to the screens, the OS is 2.3.2 of Android, making it neither Froyo nor Honeycomb as had previously been suggested, but a Gingerbread device instead.

A dual-core CPU of the Qualcomm MSM8260 1.2 GHz Snapdragon variety makes an appearance, backed up with 768MB of RAM.

The 4.3 inch display is running at a resolution of 960 x 540, which should make pictures from the 8MP rear camera (flanked by a 1.3MP front facing one too) really shine on the screen. 1080p video recording is also expected to feature.

Still no official confirmation on the device yet from HTC, but it's looking pretty clear that this one will be rubber stamped very soon.

JBL's latest speaker dock, the OnBeat, has the rare distinction of being compatible with iPods, iPhones and iPads.

Shipping with a range of docking clamps, any of the Apple media devices will work with the dock, while a 3.5mm aux-in connection will let you play about with other PMPs too. Elsewhere there's a USB connection for syncing with your iTunes library, as well as composite video output for displaying content on a big screen.

The stereo speakers themselves are 7.5 watt numbers, with plenty of DSP tech fine-tuning the outputted sound.

"Imagine what moviegoers must have felt when they heard sound paired with film for the first time in history. This is what we hope to accomplish for the next era of entertainment experiences with products such as the JBL OnBeat for the iPad, iPhone and more," said David Slump, president of the HARMAN Consumer Division, the umbrella company under which JBL reside.

"Our goal is to awaken our senses to the power that great sound and music can have on bringing media to life through the most cutting-edge devices out on the market right now."

Due out in April, click here for some more info.
