Microsoft wants more "music" on Windows Mobile

Microsoft is clearly a bit jealous of how well the iPhone/iTunes/iPod trinity is raking in cash for the Apple machine, so is keen to try and boost the amount of music services available “on the go” to users of Windows Mobile phones.

“One thing that Apple has leveraged on is the music scenario, and I think that that is something the operators and ourselves are partnering on, just to make sure that consumers can use live music in the best way,” Andy Lees, senior vice president…

Qik allows Window Mobile users to live-stream video from handsets

qik-windows-mobile.jpg

I’ve never used Qik before, but know from many of my Twitter contacts that the mobile video streaming service is hugely popular, particularly with heavyweights such as Michael Arrington, Loic Le Meur, and Kevin Rose.

The reason I’ve never used it before is because until today, it’s been limited to a select few S60 handsets, and not Windows Mobile-enabled phones, like I use. However the company has launched a limited Alpha test for Samsung Blackjack and Motorola Q phones, and will hopefully roll the…

Wholly unimportant world first – band streams live show through Facebook

RedBoxBlue-streaming-face-book-live-video.jpg

Brilliant news. We doubt anyone noticed, but brilliant news all the same.

The no-doubt popular-on-the-internet band RedBoxBlue has made the claim, reckoning that its series of streaming video performances currently being shown on Facebook are indeed a world first.

It’s not 100% live, though – they’re only beaming taped…

YouTube adds annotations to list of features, unfortunately it's incredibly annoying

youtube-annotations.jpg

Noticed anything different about YouTube? Something…kind of annoying? In the last 24 hours they’ve rolled out a new feature, ‘video annotations’, that allows the uploader of a video to place text over the clip, similar to that of Hiroyuki Nishimura’s Nico Nico Douga video site, which Wired wrote about recently.

However, the chat bubbles and links can only be added by the account-holder, meaning your videos thankfully aren’t in danger of disappearing due to huge amounts of annoying text littering the screen. The links embedded within the video hot-link to other YouTube videos, creating memes. Embedded videos on other sites, like we often do here at Tech Digest, won’t display the text, and unfortunately when you do click on a link, the video stops and starts, halting your viewing of small dogs dressed in tutus…

WiiPlayer – a hacked and streamlined unofficial iPlayer app for Wii

wiiplayer-wii-hacked-homebrew-iplayer copy.jpg

Some extremely clever man has been working away on improving the Wii’s iPlayer, creating his own solution to the rather clunky and slow official Wii implementation of the Beeb’s streaming telly service.

Moaning that the Wii’s slightly duff Opera browser simply hasn’t got the right screen resolution to handle the BBC’s default text and layout, the creator has simplified the design, bumped up the font size and generally “Apple-ised” the look and feel of iPlayer so it’s quicker to operate and easier to find your way around…

Show your CMS preference with the blogger's guide to gang-signs

bloggers-gangsigns.jpg

Over the weekend Gizmodo ran a feature, showing ‘geek culture’ gang-signs which included Windows, Ubuntu, Linux and Apple signs. But what about gang-signs showing your preferred Content Management System?

Thankfully someone’s put together the blogger’s guide to gang-signs, so when you’re at the next TechCrunch or London Bloggers’ meet-ups, you can throw your hands in the air and align yourself with the Wordpress, Movable Type or Blogtron crew.

Microsoft's Live Messenger goes all Facebook-y

facebook_msn.gif

Microsoft has added a new service to its Live Messenger software, allowing users to access a number of Facebook functions directly from their IM client.

It’s all ready to go, and available to all UK users, without needing to download software or switch anything on. Users can update their Facebook status, poke, write on walls, browse photos. and send private messages, without having the hassle of opening up a web browser window, which of course is so difficult and irritating to have to do…

Samsung backtracks over L870 "Safari" claim – it uses a standard Series 60 browser after all

samsung-l870-no-safari.jpg

Quite a few Apple fans got rather tecthy and a little bit over-protective a few days ago, when it was revealed that their beloved – and occasionally adequate – Safari browser would be appearing on the Samsung L870.

Well, it’s OK, Apple kids – you still have the exclusive. Samsung “clarified” the situation today, pointing out that the L870 – due in August – will come with your standard S60 OSS browser. Not Safari…

Amazon set to launch its own streaming movie rental service "in the next few weeks"

jeff-bezos-amazon-movie-streaming.jpg

Amazon’s big boss Jeff Bezos, speaking at the D6 conference, said the retail behemoth is planning to launch its own online video rental service rather soon.

That’s pretty much all he said on the matter, although he pointed out you’d be buying movies individually on an “a la carte” basis rather than paying a subscription, then watching via a streaming…
