According to Philips, its new 22OXW9 LightFrame LCD PC monitor is “proven to reduce eye fatigue,” making your PC-based life slightly easier to tolerate. It does this in the same way Philips’ range of HDTVs have been doing it for years – powering up a backlight to bathe the sides of the screen, and your wall, and your desk, in a relaxing glow…

Toshiba launches first DVD player with XDE video enhancement technology. Will it sell?

toshiba_xde_dvd_player.jpg

Just a couple of months ago, Toshiba announced new upscaling technology which the company claimed would rival Blu-ray, building a system in to the latest Qosmio notebooks.

We’ve heard nothing more since, expecting more details at IFA, but today Toshiba has announced a new upconverting DVD player with XDE Technology.

It’s not immediately obvious whether “eXtended Detail Enhancement” is exactly the same system that Toshiba talked about back in June, but given its feature set, it’s highly likely…

The BBC has been blowing your license fee on further developing its iPlayer service, announcing today that it’s starting to use the open source H.264 codec for its streaming telly service.

This has allowed the Beeb to boost the encoding bitrate of streamed shows from 500kbps to 800kbps, so it should all look a little sharper and cleaner when you catch up with such classics…

hannspree_ht11_lcd_tv.jpg

HANNSpree has announced its HT11 19-inch HD ready digital TV, promoting it as an ideal second telly for the bedroom, kitchen, or study.

The 19-inch screen size coupled with 170 degree viewing angle offers a decent solution when it can be hard to place a TV in a smaller room.

It’s HD ready, and while its 1,280 x 1,024 resolution isn’t going to display full 1080p if connected to a Blu-ray player, at this size that doesn’t really matter…

sharp-monster-108-inch-lcd-on-sale.jpg

11 million Japanese yen is about £52,000. Plus the shipping for a 108″ LCD TV from Japan is likely to be another £52,000, so it’s probably best to stick with that 28″ CRT of yours for a little while longer yet.

The Sharp LB-1085 – which we first revealed back in our coverage of CES 2007 – will be buyable in Japan this July. Theoretically buyable, should you be in Japan and have a van big enough…
