Now this is intriguing. Microsoft have a problem on mobile: There’s millions of phones out there, but not many of them run Windows. So what can the company do?

It turns out that the answer could be “let people install Windows on their Android phone”, if TechCrunch is to be believed.

According to the report, Microsoft is planning a custom ROM that can be installed to replace Android on mobile phones – similar to how you can install custom Android Cyanogenmod over whatever version of Android your phone came with on many handsets. The company has apparently been testing it with Chinese manufacturer Xaomi on the MI4 handset.

It’ll be interesting to see if Microsoft take it further – as it could be an easy way to grow share, without forcing everyone to buy a new phone.
