Samsung slowing production of smartwatches

Surprising news out of Samsung today as one of the company’s executives has apparently said that the company won’t be releasing fifty billion new smartwatches, each ever-so-slightly different, like you might expect.

According to Trusted Reviews, Young-hee Lee, Executive VP for marketing at Samsung Mobile, said “We’ve been introducing more devices than anybody else. It’s time for us to pause.”

What makes this surprising is that Samsung’s previous product strategy seems to have been every time someone in a research lab comes up with a new idea, to bung it into a product and release it – the opposite of Apple’s “one size fits all” approach.

The suggestion is that this means that Samsung won’t have a new smartwatch to compete with the Apple Watch when it is released next month.

Who knows, the extra time might even give Samsung more time to try to get rid of the Gear S watches that nobody wants.
