So how do you improve the iPhone? Better battery life? Even faster processors? Well one way that the Cupertino giant could enhance the phone and keep one step ahead of its rivals is to improve the camera.

So some interesting news today picked up by Apple Insider that the company has been awarded a new patent for a digital camera component which in theory could mean future iPhone users will be able to take significantly better pictures.

The key part of the patent is a light splitter which is apparently a component that’s usually found in HD video cameras. The light splitter parses red, green and blue light across three dedicated sensor as opposed to the one on the iPhone.

For the photographer then this means significantly more accurate colours. We’ll wait to to see if when and if Apple deploy it.
