Check this out – Onyx is a new wearable communications device that lets you communicate with people by voice, without having to pick up your phone. The way it works is by tethering to your phone via bluetooth, and then using the phone’s wifi or data connection to relay voice communications. Essentially, it works exactly like the communicator badges from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Made by a company called OnBeep, Onyx is activated with a tap, and also contained a jack socket for headphones (including headphones with a built in mic, like Apple headphones). The company has produced this pretty terrible video, showing how it could be used:
The device has only just started shipping in the States. The starter pack, which contains two devices, will set you back $195 – or about £130.
We’ll let you know if it becomes officially available in the UK too.
