If you’re looking for a mid-range handset then there are many options – and one of the decisions you tend to have to make is whether to go for a brand new, lower-spec device, or a flagship top-of-the-range phone from a few years ago, which has now come down in price. And this is why the 610 and the iPhone 5C make for a good battle.

Screen

The iPhone 5C has a 4″ screen running at 640×1136 (326ppi), whereas the Desire 610 has a larger 4.7″ screen running at a lower resolution: 540×960 (324ppi).

Processor and innards

The 610 is powered by a Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor – and backed-up by an Adreno 305 graphics unit. It has 1GB of RAM.

The iPhone 5C meanwhile has a Dual-core 1.3 GHz Swift (ARM v7-based) processor and separate PowerVR SGX 543MP3 triple-core graphics unit. In other words, they are roughly comparable. The 5C also has 1GB of RAM.

Perhaps the crucial difference is in operating system: the 610 runs HTC’s flavour of Android, whereas the 5C runs iOS. So I’d choose the phone based on user experience: Do I want things nice and slick, with iOS, or with more customisation? If the latter, I’d go for Android.

Camera

The rear camera on the 610 is 8MP and can shoot video in 1080p HD, and the front camera is 1.3MP and can only shoot video in 720p. This is almost identical to the 5C, which has an 8MP camera on the rear that shoots in 1080p, and a 1.2MP on the front which can also only do 720p.

Battery Life

HTC claims its phone has up to 650 hours in stand-by mode, or 16 hours of talktime, whereas the Apple claims it can only do 250 hours in stand-by, with only 10 hours of talktime.

Price

The 5C starts SIM free at £319 for the 8GB model, whereas an 8GB HTC 610 starts at £214 on Amazon.
