It’s almost a law of the internet that any discussion about The Simpsons will inevitably turn into a discussion of when The Simpsons stopped being good. For the first decade, it was some of the finest television ever made – and yet now, 25 years on each new episode feels more and more like they’re going through the motions because they don’t know how to do anything else.
Brilliantly, coder Kevin Wuhoo has come up with a way to quantify this decline – he’s created a website that will take the IMDB scores of individual episodes of a series and chart them on a graph – and draw a trendline too.
So when you put The Simpsons in – you can see this very definite downward slide:
The app can also so shows that are getting better – take Agents of SHIELD for example, which was widely viewed as terrible until the events of Captain America 2 impacted upon the series, and gave the writers an excuse to shake things up:
