So this was unexpected. Atari has launched a fitness app that will reward you for working out by letting you play some of the company’s classic arcade games. Luckily, you won’t need an Atari 2600 to use it.

Atari Fit, when it launches later this month, will have 150 exercise routines and custom programs in the app, ready to go – with tracking facilities for all of the key exercise metrics, like distance, speed, pace and calories burned. There will also be a multiplayer mode, enabling you to virtually work out against your friends – and there will even be online leaderboards.

And now here’s the weird bit: The more you exercise, the more points you win – which unlocks playtime on the likes of Pong, Super Breakout, Centipede, “and more”.

I guess the company’s CEO wasn’t joking when he pitched some crazy ideas last year.

Of course, if you’re not into all of this health stuff then you can also play Atari’s games in the Denny’s app that re-imagines major Atari titles as breakfast themed games.
