Gangnam Style breaks YouTube

For all of the talk of the internet being broken over the last few weeks, it turns out that a viral hit of old is perhaps the closest to claiming responsibility – with YouTube reporting that 2012’s Gangnam Style broke its hit counter.

Posting on the YouTube Google+ page (yep, G+ is still going), YouTube said:

“We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. “Gangnam Style” has been viewed so many times we have to upgrade!”

Essentially what this means is that the YouTube database could only store numbers of a certain size – and Gangnam Style has now passed this – which presumably meant that someone had to spend the weekend coding a quick fix.

We’re just hoping that Too Many Cooks is the next video to reach this accolade.
