Man gets $1200 in-flight wifi bill

While not quite the worst thing that can happen during a flight, this must be up there – right? A Canadian man travelling on Singapore Airlines from London to Singapore has landed himself a bill of almost $1200. Whoops.

According to the Washington Post, Jeremy Gutsche got the penalty for using too much data on the wifi – initially paying $29 for 30mb of data, rather than cut off at 30mb, it rolled over and kept charging him.

Still, to make the best of a bad situation, he’s managed to turn the bill shock into a plug for his company Trend Hunter, where he wrote about the incident:

“So what does it take to rack up $1200 of internet use? In my case, just 155 page views, mostly to my email. I know this because for the first time I counted up my page views to see where all the dollars went. I wish I could blame an addiction to NetFlix or some intellectual documentary that made me $1200 smarter. However, the Singapore Airlines internet was painfully slow, so videos would be impossible and that means I didn’t get any smarter… except about how to charge a lot of money for stuff. I did learn that.”

  • trendhunter is already a well established website! I’m sure he could challenge the charges especially now that it has escalated into a PR issue for Sing Airlines, but consumer protectionism isn’t as prevalent in Asian countries for sure
