Samsung has implicitly responded to criticism of its plastic-heavy designs today by announcing the Galaxy A5 and A3, which sport full metal unibody designs.

It is the outside of these phones that is getting all of the focus. Here’s how Samsung describes it:

“The Galaxy A5 and A3 are Samsung’s slimmest smartphones to date, featuring refined full metal unibody designs that are 6.7mm and 6.9mm thin, respectively. Both devices will come in a variety of colors, including Pearl White, Midnight Black, Platinum Silver, Soft Pink, Light Blue and Champagne Gold, to accommodate the personal style and preference of diverse users.”

So the new phones should look the part – but it’s on the inside what counts, right?

The A5 is the more powerful of the two – sporting a 1.2ghz quad-core processor, 5″ 1080p display and 2GB RAM – with a 13MP rear camera and 5MP front-facing one. The A3 meanwhile only has a 4.5″ display and 1GB of RAM, with 8MP rear camera.

On the software side, the phones are obviously almost identical to the likes of the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Alpha. Samsung is keen to point out though the 5MP front-facing camera – and the fact that it will be available in “select markets” including – perhaps crucially – China. (What was it we were saying about Samsung being worried by Xiaomi in China yesterday?).

We’ll let you know when the new handsets are available over here.
