Amazon launches Fire TV Stick to rival Chromecast

Amazon has announced a new streaming media stick, to compete with Google’s Chromecast as a budget TV streaming device.

The Fire TV stick has just gone on sale on the US Amazon site for $39 (or $19 for the next couple of days) and can essentially do almost everything that its bigger brother, the FireTV box can.

Like the Fire TV, it’ll give users access to a range of different streaming services – such as YouTube, Netflix and Amazon’s own Instant Video. Amazon is making a big fuss about the spec inside: despite the diminutive size, it is apparently offers 4 times the storage, and 2 times the memory of Chromecast. It is even going to support Amazon’s predictive pre-buffering “ASAP” function on Instant Video.

The big difference with the box is that the stick is slightly more “no frills” – the bundled remote doesn’t have voice search built in (though you can buy the voice remote separately, or you can use the Amazon app).

We’ll let you know when it comes to the UK (we’re hoping before Christmas).

  • don’t have best experience with TV dongles…they tend to overheat (like Google’s Chromecast…). Personally prefers Apple TV or Roku which is way more reliable. If it overheats all the time I would write it off before I even begin to look at their movie/tv show database
