Nintendo has announced two forthcoming packs of downloadable content for Mario Kart 8 which in a change for the series means that you’ll not only be able to play as characters from the Mario Universe (or, umm, drive a Mercedes), but you’ll be able to play as Link from the Legend of Zelda games, or the villager from Animal Crossing.

The two packs, which are due in November and next May respectively, will cost £7 each (or £11 when bought together) and also adds new vehicles and new courses. Apparently some of the courses too will also be from the Zelda and Animal Crossing universes. In one of the packs – we’re not sure which yet – there will also be a new kart modelled on the Blue Falcon from F-Zero.

The DLC will be available to pre-order – and those who buy both will also get 8 new Yoshi colours and 8 new Shy Guy colours to race with too.

Fingers crossed this is the first step towards Nintendo building a racing game with a Smash Bros-calibre roster.
