Mario Kart 8 only hit the shelves in May, but it looks like another Mario Kart title is on the way. This isn’t for consoles though – you’ll have to get on down to your local arcade, assuming that it still exists.

Namco has taken on the development duties from Nintendo for Mario Kart Arcade GP DX and the game appears to be a stripped down, but familiar version of the game we all know and love. Eight characters are available – including Namco’s own Pac-Man and Don from Taiko no Tatsujin (us neither).

The big addition though appears to be “fusion karts” in which players can work cooperatively together combining their karts into a sort-of tank. Then, much like on the Gamecube’s Mario Kart: Double Dash, one player drives whilst the other gets to throw weapons, shoot and generally cause problems for the other players. You can see it in the trailer here:

This isn’t the first time Mario Kart has hit the arcades – back in 2005 a modified version of Double Dash: Mario Kart Arcade GP was also made by Namco.

Apparently it’ll start appearing in arcades later this year.
