YouView facing trademark infringement lawsuit

On-demand TV provider YouView, which is perhaps best known for previously being led by Alan Sugar, has been slapped on the wrist by the High Court for trademark infringement with its name.

The court ruled that the name ‘YourView’ has been infringed by YouView, and as a result, YourView owner Total Ltd is now seeking an injunction against the connected TV platform. Ultimately, this could mean that YouView could have to change its name – much like how Microsoft had to rename its cloud service “SkyDrive” to “OneDrive” after complaints from Sky television.

It’s likely this won’t be the last time we’ll hear about the case and Total’s claims, but YourView has confirmed it will continue to protect its brand by appealing today’s court judgement.

So perhaps it is time to start thinking of alternative names? What about keeping the “You” but choosing another TV-related word. Hmm… Tube? has anyone had that one yet?
