The Amazon '3D' phone: here come the rumours
Sometime today at an event in Seattle, Amazon is expected to announce its long-anticipated entry into the already-crowded smartphone market.
In the absence of any real news, the tech media is overrun with speculation about what the new device will be like.
The strongest, and most popular, rumour so far is that it will be a 3D phone.
The Telegraph reports that leaked photos and details suggest that the forthcoming smartphone will have a holographic 3D interface, powered by four infrared cameras, situated in each of the four corners on the face of the phone.
The Independent says that in terms of tech specs, the Amazon phone is likely to be have 4.7-inch, 720p screen, and run a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 2GB of RAM.
On the pricing front, KnowYourMobile says that the Amazon phone will probably not be expensive. “Amazon usually prices its hardware very competitively, and we’d expect the Kindle Phone to be priced inline with this tradition. Specs wise it’s looking like a mid-to-high-end device, so expect a RRP similar to that of the OnePlus One and Google Nexus 5.”
The gurus at PC Advisor believe that Amazon will most likely not offer the Google Play store to shop for apps, games, music and other media. “Instead, users will have to browse the Amazon App store just like on Kindle Fire tablets,” they say.
They also believe that the phone will launch in the US first (exclusive to AT&T, according to the Wall Street Journal) before being rolled out to the UK and other markets at a later date.
