The smartwatch market is booming in 2014, with a new device popping up almost weekly.

Samsung was one of the first major tech brands to launch a wearable with its Galaxy Gear watch. It’s even developed its own OS, Tizen, which is being used in the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches (until now, its phones, tablets and watches have run Android).

Now it looks as though Samsung could be developing a watch powered by the new Android Wear OS developed by Google specifically for wearable devices.

Several tech sites are reporting that Samsung has submitted a device – codenamed SM-R382 – to the US Federal Communications Commission.

The SammyToday site says that it suspects SM-R382 “could be a Gear 2 running Google’s Android Wear OS and might be presented among other wearables at upcoming Google I/O event”.

AndroidHeadlines reports that the new device looks to be about 10mm shorter than the Gear 2, “giving it dimensions of 37 x 46 mm – compared to the Gear 2′s dimensions of 36.9 mm x 58.4 mm”.

As yet, there is no official word from Samsung about any device such as an Android Wear watch.

Whether or not SM-R382 is a wearable or another device, it’s clear that Samsung is keen to continue its dominance of the burgeoning smartwatch market.
