O2 has announced a new Pay As You Go (PAYG) tariff that could help users get cheaper calls and data when they need it.

The way the “Big Bundles” will work is quite clever. First up, here’s the three options:

– £10 Big Bundle: 100 minutes, 1000 texts and 500MB 3G data
– £15 Big Bundle: 200 minutes, 2000 texts and 1GB 3G or 4G data
– £20 Big Bundle: 400 minutes, 4000 texts and 2GB 3G or 4G data

Sounds suspiciously like a contract, right?

The difference is that when you sign up to a bundle, you’re only tied to it for a month – so if you know you’ve got a busy month ahead you can upgrade to the £20 bundle, before switching down to the £10 bundle for when you spend a week where there is no phone signal (say, a nuclear bunker or most of Cornwall).

They can also be combined with O2’s existing slate of “Bolt-On” options.

The bundles launch on Thursday.
