CNET says that the new tablet incorporates advanced vision capabilities that can capture more precise three-dimensional images of objects.

It says that the tablet will have two rear-facing cameras, infrared depth sensors, and advanced imaging software.

Google reportedly plans to produce about 4,000 prototypes beginning in June. The device is said to be part of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group called “Project Tango”.

The Project Tango computer vision initiative incorporates multiple advanced imaging sensors into a portable device for real-time 3D mapping.

Google’s Project Tango website notes the sensor suite “allow[s] the phone to make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second updating its position and orientation in real-time combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around you”.
