Amazon.co.uk take on Steam with support for digital game downloads

amazon-game-downloads.jpgAmazon.co.uk will now support digital game and software downloads, letting you directly download and install your purchases from the site immediately after check out.

Over 600 titles have already been added, including Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3, The Sims 3, Borderlands 2 and Mass Effect 3. There’s also a dedicated free-to-play store (www.amazon.co.uk/freetoplay), where gamers can grab the likes of Stronghold Kingdoms and Second Life.

If you’re not much of a gamer, Amazon will also be offering software downloads including Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, anti-virus and security products from Norton and Kaspersky, business software from Sage and language learning software from Rosetta Stone.

The store also includes Steam-like backup and storage in a cloud-based digital library, meaning all your games can be downloaded to other machines as many times as each product license allows for. Pre-orders are also supported, while product codes for other services such as Origin, Xbox LIVE or Microsoft Office.com can also be bought and redeemed seperately at the relevant digital store,

“Not only is this exciting for everyday purchases but for major upcoming releases, Amazon customers will be able to get their hands on products without waiting for them to arrive in the post.”
