Dear EA, please let John Carpenter make the Dead Space movie he so clearly wants to

Dead-space.jpgJohn Carpenter, the man who brought us the horror classic The Thing and 80s action badassery with Escape From New York, has revealed his love of the Dead Space gaming franchise, and (excitingly) his desire to turn the games into a movie.

Speaking to Game Informer, the 65-year old director drew comparisons between the Dead Space games and the Alien franchise, before noting a few significant details that he feels sets the two apart.

“You know it’s great,” he explained.

“The first game was more – I guess it was like Alien – but not quite. It was a little different than that.

“I maintain that Dead Space would just make a great movie because you have these people coming onto an abandoned, shut-down space ship and they have to start it up and something’s on board. It’s just great stuff.

“I would love to make Dead Space [into a film], I’ll tell you that right now. That one is ready-made.”

EA, make it so! The gangly alien beasts of Dead Space always brought to mind the horrible creature from Carpenter’s The Thing, while that movie’s snowy setting itself is reminiscent of Dead Space 3’s environments.

If anyone would be able to nail the feel of Dead Space, it’d be Carpenter, whose keen horror adn action focus would be a perfect fit in the directors seat. Heck, you could argue that Dead Space is a direct desecndant of The Thing anyway!

Dead Space has already been the inspiration behind two animated movies, and it’s not the first time the game’s been considered for a live action flick. However, its creators have been wary of sullying the popular franchise, fearful it may become yet another terrible game-to-movie adaptation.

Dead Space co-creator Ian Milham, speaking to Newsbeat following the release of Dead Space 2, said of such plans:

“We would love to have a live action film and we’ve had a lot of discussion. But one of the reasons Dead Space still exists and is popular is because we’ve made sure to do everything right. So we’re doing the same with the film, not just a cheap cash-in but to do something really worthwhile, so we’ll see.”

Carpenter has dipped his toes into the world of video games once before, helping to direct F.E.A.R 3 and develop its narrative. But even Carpenter was burned by Aliens: Colonial Marines it seems:

“It’s all about money,” he said.

“It’s not that something is being mistreated, it’s just another marketing issue. They’re trying to get you to buy the game, which I stupidly did.”
