Ready for some unexpected and totally awesome Zelda news? Nintendo have just confirmed that a sequel to the SNES classic The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is headed to the Nintendo 3DS handheld.

The game (which we’re tentatively calling A Link to the Past 2 in lieu of an official title), is set in the same world as the 1992 classic, with revamped visuals and new dungeons making the most of the console’s 3D effects.

Those 3D effects will tie directly into the game’s puzzle system too, with Link shown jumping up towards the player in the video, as well as a teased side-scrolling element being on display, where Link becomes a 2D drawing that can move along walls.

Until now, the 3DS’s only Zelda game has been the highly-praised 3D remake of Ocarina of Time, making today’s announcement the first news of an all-new Zelda game for the handheld.

“What we want to achieve with this new Zelda game is to reinvigorate the flat 2D world of A Link To The Past with the sense of height and volume using the three-dimensional display of Nintendo 3DS,” said Nintendo Europe president Satoru Shibata.

“With it, it’s easier to differentiate levels in the environment and we can truly utilise height differences in dungeons as a puzzle-solving mechanic. While this game is set in the game world of A Link To The Past it features entirely new dungeons and an original story arc.”

Launching in time for Christmas 2013, we’ll have more on the new 3DS Zelda adventure in the coming months. Keep an eye out for the above trailer in all its full-3D glory heading to the Nintendo 3DS eShop later today.
