Windows 8 Blue update may let you skip Start screen tiles at boot
Windows 8 is a grower: you’ll be frustrated with it at first, seemingly moving things around just for the sake of it, but give it time and you’ll find it a pretty comfortable progression from Windows 7. For many though, that “Metro” Start screen is still an issue, with plenty hoping to be able to just jump straight to the standard desktop view after booting.
With a leaked version of the Windows Blue update now in the wild, Russian Blog Microsoft Portal are suggesting that this feature may indeed soon be offered by the Redmond company.
They’ve spotted a revamped twinui.dll file that will check either a registry key or policy setting to set whether or not a user wants to see the divisive Start screen, with the value tagged CanSuppressStartScreen within the DLL.
So why would Microsoft perhaps be thinking of offering the option to skip entirely the most-publicised addition to their latest operating system? It seems it will be to appease enterprise users, who need to milk every working second they can get, rather than getting to grips with a new interface. IT Administrators may be more open to upgrading systems to Windows 8 if the Start screen can be skipped.
Even without a simple UI option to implement the Start screen skip, it’s still possible to jump straight to the desktop view in Windows 8. Users need only add the Explorer.exe to the CurrentVersionRun registry key.
The Windows 8 Blue update is expected to land before the end of the year, with a public preview likely following Microsoft’s annual developers conference in June.

Who cares if you can skip it on boot? Without a start menu, it’s going to drop you right back into the butt-ugly Metro start screen. People want the option to completely disable Metro, not just avoid it once and then rely on 3rd party software for functionality that should have existed at launch.

Yeah, W8 really needs that, BECAUSE PRESSING ONE KEY TO SWITCH TO THE DESKTOP IS JUST TOO HARD TO DO.
It’s more than that. You need to consider the average user. Anyone on this site will be pretty tech-savvy, not so with others. Not to mention that the whole purpose of the Start screen is to get people to buy stuff (tablets, phones, apps). I can bypass the large majority of Metro, yet I still find the whole thing utterly offensive. And I think Microsoft should truly go out of business for trying to shove this chit down people’s throats.
Yeah, but you have to keep pressing the windows key to get to control panels, then w-d to get back tot he desktop, then you open a pdf, and metro reappears, then you have to w-d to get back to your browser, then you decide to use the google metro app, so back to metro, then you click on a link, and it wont open a webpage unless you go back to the desktop… It’s not too hard to do, just a bit schizophrenic.
I cannot call this a feature but something that was needed form the get go.
