Ubisoft have announced that a HD remake of classic adventure game Flashback will be hitting the PSN and XBLA later this year.

Though utilising 3D graphics and the Unreal Engine, the remake (overseen by members of the original “core team” at now-defunct Delphine Software, headed up by Paul Cuisset) will retain the 2D-side scrolling action of the original. Beyond the graphical enhancements, it’s not yet clear what other current-gen enhancements have been made to the title.

The Amiga classic, which eventually made tis way onto 16-Bit systems including the Super Nintendo and Mega Drive, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, with the birthday seemingly the impetus for the remake.

It’s possible also that Flashback HD is testing the waters ahead of a full Flashback sequel. A game called Flashback Origins has been rumoured to have been in production since 2011, with Paul Cuisset’s VectorCell apparently securing €300,000 of government funding.
