Sony cut PS Vita price in Japan, but UK price stays fixed

PS Vita review 1.jpgSony’s PlayStation Vita handheld gaming console is to have its price slashed by a third in Japan. Both versions of the console, including the previously premium priced 3G version as well as the Wi-Fi only version, will now cost 19,980 yen (roughly £139), down from 24,980 for the Wi-Fi model.

A week’s free access to the PlayStation Plus service, which offers full games such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss up for download, is included in the price.

The console has struggled to deliver big sales figures around the globe, with the Vita trailing behind Nintendo’s rival 3DS console with 15,000 units on average sold a week compared to the 3DS’s 70,000.

However, there doesn’t appear to be any sign of a global price cut to follow, or at least not yet. A UK Sony spokesperson stated that:

“The price cut announced today is for the SCE Japan region only. We have nothing to announce at this time regarding pricing within our own region.”

The price cut puts the Japanese version of the Vita handheld at almost £100 less than it costs in the UK. A Wi-Fi with 3G build of the Vita from Amazon in the UK currently costs £227.
